Badaling Great Wall & Tours

Famous Badaling Great Wall is located in Yanqing County of Beijing about 70km from downtown. In ancient time, it was an important pass to protect Beijing city on north side and now it is a quintessence of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall.

From 1569 to 1582, this area was built with obstacles, border town, tip wall and defensive horse wall on each side of mountain in every pass, later to be built as Great Wall with enemy tower and beacon tower. The wall is 9 meters at most and appears as trapezoid, 6.5 meters wide of the base and 5.8 meters of the top. The narrowest part on the wall is only 2 meters wide with dangerous terrain. The biggest stone block is 3 meters in length and 1.7 tons in weight.

Watch Tower and Beacon Tower are the most attractive features of Badaling Great Wall. Watch Tower is usually a rectangular structure built on the top of the wall. The first floor of watchtower is the storeroom for weapons, and the storeroom has a number of small windows for archers. The second floor was built with battlements, peepholes and apertures for archers as well as beacon facilities for sending signal. Beacon Tower is an independent blockhouse located at west and east mountains, which is convenient to watch the trends of enemy. This part is one of important parts of Badaling Great Wall and usually, there are five beacon pillars on each beacon tower.
