National Grand Theater

Overview about Beijing National Grand Theater
Like the so-called Bird's Nest, "the Egg," National Grand Theater show visitors its characteristic building construction from outside, like a half shape of egg floating in the water. Located on the Chang'an Jie (just west of Tiananmen Square) close from Forbidden City, National Grand Theater is only separated from the Tiananmen Square by The Great Hall of the People. Designed by French architect Paul Andreu, the National Grand Theater, the building houses an opera house, a concert hall and two theaters included in a titanium and glass shell which houses the public space.

Structures of Beijing National Grand Theater
Beijing National Grand Theater is a curved building, covers an area of about 118,900 square meters with total area of building is about 217,500 square km, emerges like an island at the center of a lake. National Grand Theater houses three performance auditoriums – a 2,416-seat opera house, 2,017-seat concert hall and a smaller 1,040 capacity theater as well as art and exhibition spaces opened to a wide public. Lots of dance shows, ballets, dramas, operas and other kinds of performances are performed in National Grand Theater.

Beijing National Grand Theater was built floating on the surface of the water and surrounded by an artificial lake, with a total area of 35,500 square meters. The main north entrance is an 80m corridor running under the pool. The south entrance and other entrances are all built under the surrounding water.

How to Get Beijing National Grand Theater
By Subway:
Get off at Tiananmen West Station (line 1) and get out of the station from Exit C (southwest exit). There is an underground passageway to the theater directly.
By Bus:
Bus 99, Zhuan 2, 90, 52, 1, 10, 728, Zhuan 1, 22, 205, 5 to Tiananmen West Station
Bus 5 to Nan Chang Jie Station
Bus 10, 22 to Shi Bei Hu Tong Station
Opening Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, and national holidays opens from 9:00am-17:00pm (admission before 16:30pm), Monday closed
Daily visit: 30 RMB/person;
Note: Children below 1.2 meters are admitted at half-price.
