Confucius Temple

the gate of Confucious templeThe Confucius Temple (Temple of Confucius) in Beijing is located on Guozijian Street, inside Andingmen. Sacrifices were made to Confucius(551 B.C.-479 B.C.), the greatest thinker, educationist and founder of Confucianism in ancient China, during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties at this temple. The Confucius Temple was initially built in 1 302, the 6th year during Yuan Emperor Dade's reign, and was restored and rebuilt on several occasions during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In 1737, during the reign of Qing Emperor Qianlong, the major halls were renovated and were recovered with magnificent yellow glazed roof tiles, except that the Chongshengci (Shrine of the Great Sage) for worshipping Confucius' parents was covered with green glazed tiles. Now, the temple houses the Capital Museum.

Temple of Confucius

The Confucius Temple occupies an area of 22,000 square meters and consists of four courtyards. The main structures include Xianshimen(Gate of the Sage Master), Dachengmen(Gate of Great Accomplishment), Dachengdian(Hall of Great Accomplishment) and Chongshengci(Shrine of the Great Sage). Dachengdian is the main building in the temple, where the memorial ceremony for Confucius was held. There is a broad yard in front of the main hall, with straight paved path with 11 merits recording pavilions on both sides. Dachengdian, 9-bayed in width and 5-bayed in depth, has a double-eaved hip roof covered with yellow glazed tiles; together with the carved beams and painted rafters, the hall has great momentum and looks magnificent. Inside the palace, the spirit tablet of Confucius is located in the middle of the palace flanked by tablets of his four main disciples and 12 renowned Confucian scholars of successive dynasties, and the statues of his 72 distinguished men of Confucianism line both sides of the gallery.

In addition, many instruments and sacrificial utensils used for the ceremony in the Qing Dynasty are set inside the Palace. Outside the Dachengmen are such subsidiary buildings as Shenchu(Divine Kitchen), Zaishengting(Pavilion for Sacrificial Animals), Zhizhaisuo (Abode for Sacrifice) and Shenku(Divine Warehouse). In addition, on either side of the front Couryard, 198 stone Dachengdian in Confucious templetablets are arranged. These tablets bear the names and native places of 51,624 Jinshi of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, who passed the imperial examinations. The tablets are material evidence of the imperial examination system in ancient China. A lot of  ancient cultural relics in the Confucius Temple, 10 drumshaped stone blocks are the most precious relics. Placed inside the Dachengmen, the stone drums were made on ancient models from 1736 to 1795 and two tablets associated with event were erected.
