Main Buildings on Simatai Great Wall

Simatai Great WalI is separated into two parts by a valley, namely the east part and west part. Linked with the Jinshanling Section of the Great Wall in Hebei Province, the west part appears gentle with 18 well—preserved watchtowers dotting here and there. Comparing with the west part, the east part is somewhat steep and cliffy, 16 diversified watchtowers densely scattered on the brows of razor-sharp cliffs, this part is the essence of Simatai Great Wall, including such famous attractions as Wangjinglou (Watching Beijing Tower), Xiannulou (Fairy Tower), Tianti(Heavenly Ladder)Simatai Great Wall with Treesand Tianqiao (Sky Bridge). With an elevation of 986 meters, Wangjinglou is regarded as the summit of Simatai Great Wall. It was said that when he looks into the distance from here, one  can get a panoramic view of the rolling mountains and Beijing City in bright days, while lights shimmering faintly in downtown Beijing at nights, hence its name.

Leaning against a mountain slope with a 90-degree gradient, the Heavenly Ladder is the way to the almost 1000 – meter - high Wangjinglou. Stretching upward along the abrupt mountain ridges, the narrowest part of Simatai Great Wall is just half a meter wide. Don not try to climb if you are not bold enough because both sides of the stairway are sheer cliffs.

Ridges on the northern side of the mountain are very narrow, some sections of Simatai Great Wall being only 40 centimeters. Down below are dangerous precipices, which added difficulty to the construction of the wall. To strengthen defense capabilities, a wall as thick as two bricks was built to connect the watch towers. Therefore it is called "One-Side-Wall".

The Xiannulou is the most beautiful of all towers on Simatai Great Wall and is known for its exquisite architecture. The wall of the tower is pierced by ten arches, and the arched doors are decorated with the pattern of twin lotus flowers. Above the very center of the tower there is a caisson ceiling in cobweb shape. Legend goes that it was the dwelling place for an antelope reincarnated in the form of an angel who fell in love with a shepherd.
