Tiananmen Square

the night view of Tianmen Tower

Located in the center of downtown Beijing, the Tiananmen Square is said to be the largest public square in the world. It is 880 meters from north to south, and 500 meters from east to west, with a total area of 440, 000 square meters and can hold one million people.

Tiananmen Square

The Tiananmen Square is named after its magnificent Tiananmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace)Rostrum, which was the south gate of the Imperial City. The Tiananmen Square used to be a forbidden area during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It was surrounded by lofty walls on all sides, and has gates on each side. The Square was opened to public in 1911. Over several hundred years, in front of the Tiananmen, many democracy meetings and demonstrations were held. In 1919, the May 4th Movement, which marks the start of the new-democratic revolution in China, took place in this square. On October 1, 1949, Chairman Mao Zedong proclaimed on Tiananmen Rostrum the founding of a new China to the world.

Today, the Five-Star Red Flag flies high on Tiananmen Square, the Monument to the People's Heroes towers over the center. To its south lie the Chairman Mao's Memorial Hall and the Zhengyangmen. The Great Hall of the People stands to the east, while the National Museum of China to the west. These buildings, old and new, together form a grand spectacle of tremendous momentum.
