Tips for clothing

Above all pack a pair of comfortable, durable walking shoes. The pavements take a toll on shoes and the dusty air is hard on clothing. Cotton shirts and trousers are best for coping with the heat. Shorts are acceptable in summer, although few Beijingers wear them. Warmer coats and gloves are necessary from November through to early April. A water proof jacket and umbrella should be packed for changes in the weather, whatever the season. A sweater and light jacket are handy.

Temples and historical sites do not have clothing rules. Informal attire is acceptable nearly everywhere, including most fine restaurant. Formal wear (shirt, dresses, suits, ties) is seldom required, except for business travellers. Most hotels provide slippers but not bathrobes.
