Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center

lovely pandas on the grassChengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center, or simply Chengdu Panda Base, is a non-profit research and breeding facility for giant pandas and other rare animals. It is located on Futou Mountain in the northern suburbs of the city of Chengdu in Sichuan province. Chengdu Panda Base was founded in 1987. It started with 6 giant pandas that were rescued from the wild. By 2007, it has had 110 panda births, and the captive panda population has grown to 62.

The Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center is famous for its great work in protecting the endangered species such as giant pandas, small pandas and black-necked cranes. It was awarded "The Global Top 500 in Environmental Protection" by the United Nations, and Chinese Green Science Prize by the state government.

The giant pandas were originally living in the dense forest on the mountains around Chengdu, but because of the deteriorating natural environment, their life becoming more and more miserable. Now the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center give them a safe place. The Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center has delivery room, fodder rooms, sleeping quarters, a sport ground and a medical station all the facilities aim to protect the pandas. The center gathers all the panda families. In every year there are many new panda babies born here, thus the breeding center has become the largest man-bred panda group in the world.

In the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center there is a Giant Panda Museum , and it is the world's only museum that focuses entirely on the critically endangered giant panda. The museum's collection includes displays of panda habitat and of pictures of pandas, and there are many scientific displays that give visitors a comprehensive education on their characteristics, habitat and distribution in the wild, and China's conservation and breeding efforts.  The museum also exhibits books and panda sleeping in chengdu panda breeding and research center scientific literature that authors around the world have written about giant pandas throughout history.

The Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center is surrounded by verdant hills, green forests and clear lakes with many kinds of bird flying and singing. There are black and white swans leisurely cruising on the tranquil lake; the green peacocks roaming and demonstrating their majestic tail feathers on the meadow; Birds from far away are all coming to play a part of the scene. Beside these beautiful sights, the world's first Giant Panda Museum, China's largest Butterfly and Vertebrate Museums are here. These exhibition venues display about 1200 kinds of specimen of rare animals and endangered species, which include the giant pandas, birds, fish and insects, as well as a library of animals from China and foreign countries.

The stated goal of Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center is to "be a world-class research facility, conservation education center, and international educational tourism destination." The center also has food and beverage facilities and provides services such as tour guide, accommodations and tent renting for camping.
