Elephant Trunk Hill

the Elephant trunk hill with a stone elephantElephant Trunk Hill is located between the southeast of Guilin City and the western bank of the Li River. It is the Guilin's best known sight and owns a charming flavor in sunrise and sunset arousing your imagination.

Elephant Trunk Hill is originally named "Li Hill," "Yi Hill" and "Chenshui Hill." It has three hundred and sixteen million years of history. This hill got its name as it resembles elephant leisurely sucking water from the river with its long trunk. With an elevation of 200 meters, the hill towers 55 meters above the water measuring 108 meters in length and 100 meters in width.

According to legend, a heavenly elephant once came to earth to help the workers. This angered the emperor of heaven who stabbed the elephant where it stood drinking, thus turning it into stone. The cylinder shaped Puxian Pagoda on the top of the hill resembles a handle of a sword which used by the emperor of heaven.

The Elephant Trunk Hill is one of Guilin's most recognizable landmarks. Exploring in the Elephant Trunk Hill Park, you will enjoy many charming sights, such as Water Moon Cave (Shui Yue Cave), Elephant Eye Cave, Puxian Pagoda, Yunfeng Temple (a building with ancient style), Love Island, Osmanthus Square and so on.

Water Moon Cave (Shui Yue Cave)

The Water Moon Cave (Shui Yue Cave) formed between "elephant trunk" and "elephant body" in Elephant Trunk Hill is a semi-round cave penetrated by water. The inverted reflection of the huge cave in water plus the part above forms a full lovely moon. When on a full moon night, the water waves and the moon glitters create a fantastic scene which has been highly honored by poets, painters over history. In and out of the cave are many laudatory carvings and inscriptions, the most well known of which is a poem by Lu You, one of the four great poets of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127 - 1279). The poem describes: on the river floor is the bright moon, above water floating bright moon: water flow moon still, moon goes down water move down. You could enjoy a boat ride into the huge cave along the jade-green river.

Elephant Eye Cavethe Elephant trunk hill with green trees

Climbing through the snaking stone path up to Elephant Trunk Hill, you will see another cave inserting in the hillside. This interesting cave is regarded as the eyes of the huge "elephant" and is known as Elephant Eye Cave. With a height of around 2 meters, the cave spans 5 to 10 meters in width, about 52 meters in length. Look through the cave and you could enjoy the panoramic view of Guilin City.

Puxian Pagoda

On top of Elephant Trunk Hill stands the two-storey Puxian Pagoda surrounded by green trees. Built in the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), the cylinder shaped pagoda looks like the handle of a sword on the back of the "elephant" seen from distance and many beautiful legends about the pagoda with good wishes are said among people. The north seat of the second floor is inlaid with an image of Bodhisattva Puxian.

Yunfeng Temple

Yufeng Temple nestles at the southwest foot of Elephant Trunk Hill. Legend shows this temple was build in Tang Dynasty and it was one of the four famous temples in Guilin. During the period of Heavenly Kingdom of Peace (1850 - 1864), and the period of the Revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen in 1911, this temple plays the important role as gathering place for all the comrades. Therefore, there are many historical cultural relics in the temple.
