West Lake

The West Lake lies in the west of the city, hence its name. It is what the beauty of Hangzhou is all about. The lake is surrounded by mountains on its three sides with the fourth sideLotus under the Broken Bridge bordering the urban district. West Lake covers a water surface of 6 square km. The whole lake is filled with green trees and beautiful lake views. All told there are 50 major scenic spots and 20 or so sites of historical and cultural interest.

The beauty of the lake lies in a lingering charm that survives the charge of seasons throughout a year, of hours in a day, and of different weather. Tourists have named these as the ten most beautiful sights at the West Lake, namely Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard, Autumn Moon Over the Calm Lake, Remaining Snow at Broken Bridge, Listening to Orioles Singing in Ripples of Willows, Evening Bell at Nanping Hill, Viewing Fish in the Flowering Harbor, The Spring Dawn Round the Su Causeway, Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds, and Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, Leifeng Pagoda Standing in the Broken Bridge. Sushi, a famous poet in the Song Dynasty ever compared the lake to Xizi(Xishi) an unrivalled beauty of the Spring and Autumn Period.

Spring view of the causewaySpring Dawn Round the Su Causeway

It tops the list of the ten best known sights in Hangzhou West Lake. The causeway was built during the Northern Song Dynasty by Su Dongpo, a great scholar in ancient China. It stretches around 2.8 kilometers long and is spanned by six bridges and heavily sheltered by green vegetation. When spring comes, the whole causeway is blanketed by peach blossoms and weeping willows, making an especially charming scene.

Leifeng Pagoda Standing in the Broken Bridge

The stone bridge in West Lake is at the eastern end of the Bai Causeway. And it is where the well-known legend tale "Lady White Snake" took place. Though named Broken Bridge, it is not broken, just because looking from afar, the bridge appears to be broken.

Viewing Fish in the Flowering Harbor

The spot lies at the southern end of the Su Causeway in West Lake. A clean stream leads from Huajia Hill to the West Lake through here, so it is named as "Flowery Harbor". Viewing Fish at Flowery Harbor, has been made into a 22 hectares park with many varieties of trees and flowers, featuring a peony garden which blooms in April and a goldfish pond which is the famous site for viewing fish.

Autumn Moon Over the Calm Lake

It is located at the western end of Bai Causeway in West Lake. With its cement terrace bounded on three sides by water, this teahouse became one of the traditional places to view the West Lake, especially on the mid-Autumn night when the moon is full and bright, hence its name as "Autumn Moon on Calm Lake". Various garden plants and flowers intermingle pavilions andSpring in West Lake platforms.

Three Pools Mirroring the Moon

First built over 800 years ago and being 2 meters high, the Three Pools is the main scenic spot. To the west of the isle stand three ball-shaped hollow stone pagodas with five round holes around. At the night of the Mid-Autumn festival, when the moon shines full and bright in the sky, a candle will be lit inside each of the pagoda, then the light and the moon cast their reflections through the holes on the water, hence the name.

In addition, there are other spots like Orioles Singing in Ripples of Willows, Night Bell Rolling Along the Southern Bank, Lotus in the Breeze at the Winery Yard and more in West Lake.
