Stanley

The Stanley is a must-see when visiting Hong Kong. It was a common fishing village located on the southernmost part of the Island, next to the South China Sea. As long time ago in theView of the Stanley area middle of the village there were many Bombax Ceiba (Red Kapok Tree) which would be covered with red blossoms during its flowering season, it was called Chizhu(means red pillar) in Chinese. But in the 19th century, it was renamed as Stanley by the British in order to honour the Lord Stanley.

Beautiful Stanley in Hong Kong

Nowadays, Stanley has turned into a famous scenic spot as well as the dwellings of foreign people and merchant princes who love the verdant mountain and clear blue sea here.

Except its seaside scenic beauty, Stanley also features numbers of places of interest. The Murray House is a three-storied building with several restaurants. It was originally built in 1844, was demolished in 1982 and rebuilt after the European style in 1998. Now it has a mini museum introducing its history. Blake Pier located beside Murray House was first dismantled in 1965 and later relocated to Morse Park to form the roof of the Morse Park pavilion. Now it has returned to its role as a public pier in Stanley, complementing the colonial architectural style of Murray House.

The Stanley Market is popular with both foreign tourists and the local people. It is a perfect place to find a special gift for friends or relatives with numerous bargains including clothing, especially silk garments and traditional Chinese dress, as well as postcards, souvenirs, antiques, Chinese arts and crafts.

Along the waterfront of Stanley lie a row of bars and restaurants for visitors to relax, enjoy the view as well as sample the delights of both Western and Eastern cuisine alfresco. More, many of bars and restaurants offer outdoors dining in the weekends when the street is closed off to motorized vehicles.

The Stanley also features some elegant beaches suitable for windsurfing. And the adjacent Stanley Beach is the location of dragon boat races during the Dragon Boat Festival. Drawing participants from both the local fishermen and the corporate expatriats, it becomes quite a party.
