Lugu Lake

As a deep lake dotted with some islets and surrounded by high mountains, Lugu lake is like a beautiful pearl shining among the hills of the northwest plateau in Yunnan. The lake is at a high elevation of 2,685 meters (8,809 feet) on the high mountains on the borders of Sichuan, Yuannan and Tibet Provinces.

Lugu lake is famous for its natural beauty. The lake shapes like a horse's hoof whose width from south to north is narrower. In the morning the light of the rising sun mixed with the mist gives the lake an orange glow. And the lake will turn into jade green when the sun causes the hills to give their shadows onto the water. In the evening the lake is quite and deep green.

Lugu lake has five islands that are different in sizes and like five green boats on the water. Among these the most notable ones are the Heiwawu Island, Liwubi Island, and Lige Island. Heiwawu Island lies in the center of the lake with various of birds living on. Nixi Island is the smallest one, which is an oblong rock covered with shrubs and moss. In addition, there are three peninsulas and an island linked to a seawall on the shore by a path paved with small stones.

The inhabitants around Lugu lake are the Mosuo people, a small tribe that is considered a sub clan of Naxi people. The Mosuo currently do not have a written language. And here the Mosuo people lead a matriarchal society where there is no marriage. Men stay at women's home and the mates are called 'Axia' and the intimate relationship keeps as long as they like. Kids are raised up by women and use their mothers's surname. Consequently, the family is composed of the members of the matrilineal kin. Women hold the main position in the society forming a modern 'woman's kingdom'.
