Baisha Fine Music

This kind of Naxi Classical Music consists of 24 "qupai" (music tunes), all antiquated, simple and elegant in style, lofty and dynamic in character. People said that this music is created to honor the first emperor of the Yuan Dynasty-Kublai Khan who met danger on his expedition to Dali and be helped by Mailiang, the leader of the Naxi people. To show his deep appreciation, Kublai Khan left half of his band and many musical scores as a gift before leaving. This music can be traced back to the court music of the Song Dynasty. It contains some Naxi language. The "sugudu", an ancient Mongolian musical instrument used in the performance of the Baisha music is a corrupted pronunciation of the Mongolian musical instrument "hebusi". Now Lijiang still keeps a "sugudu" handed down from that time, while none of the ancient "hebusi" can be found among the Mongolians in the north.
