What Kind of Equipments Were Used to Build the Great Wall

As we all know the construction of the Great Wall is an enormous engineering feat, therefore it is next to impossible to build the Great Wall all by manpower, then what kind of equipments or tools were used to build the Great Wall in ancient times?

Great Wall in China

According to historical documents, there are some equipments and tools which were used while building the Great Wall. However, they are very simple and crude. The equipments for building the Great Wall are mainly for transportation, like the hand-pushed wagon. The little wagon is made of wood with only one wheel. It is said that the wagon was invented by the famous militarist Zhugeliang. According to legends, Zhu invented a wagon-like transportation to carry the supplies. Some researchers confirmed that what he invented is just the single-wheel wagon. When the Great Wall was built in Ming Dynasty, the single-wheel wagon was only used to carry construction materials on gentle slopes, and when the slopes got steep, the workmen used the so-called Flying Basket and Ropeway. Back then, the workmen would set up some ropeway between two mountains with some baskets hooked on the ropeway (equipped with pulleys) to carry the materials up the hill.

Moreover, when the enormous stone materials were needed to be carried up the hill, the workmen used the rolling logs and crowbar. With the help of the rolling logs and crowbars, the large amounts of stone materials were transported up the hills. In addition, when the slopes got stepper, the workmen would use capstan to carry the heavy materials up the hill, in this way, it was easier and safer and under the circumstance of the time, it was pretty sophisticated. The simple and crude tools aside, there were some animals involved to carry the materials up the hills, like the donkeys and goats alike. According to legends, when Badaling section was built, a large amount of donkeys and goats were driven up the rugged hills, carrying loads of bricks.

All in all, while these simple and crude equipments and tools may seem out of date from architectural perspective of the current time, but they did contributed a whole lot in the construction of the Great Wall. Even for the recent restoration of the Great Wall, there were some donkeys used to carry the construction materials up the hill.

It is so long that equal to over 30 percent of the total length of Great Wall of China. Although long distance buildings were built, only one third of the walls remained nowadays. According to the local farmers, Wang Dafang section has been disappeared.

Why Damage cannot Stop
The serious damage cannot stop for three reasons: natural force, human being destruction and lack of knowledge. First, the bad environment caused the Great Wall destruction. Most of the sections lied in the desert in Mongolia, so the desert causes big damage. It cannot be changeable for the natural destroy. But the damage created by human can be controlled. Why the human damage the Great Wall so many years without stopping? The big reason is that the punishment is not server. In addition to the upper two reasons, lack of neighborhood knowledge also impacts the protection work. Most of the local farmers have no ideas about the wall in their hometown. So, we should adopt methods to warn the people and let them know what the real wall is and educate them relative laws.

After this case, more effects were put into the protection of the wall. In the year of 2010, there are 38 farmers contributed into the protection. Reed and Willow Great Wall

It is universally known that the Great Wall of China was built with rammed bricks as well as solid stones. In fact, the sections of the Great Wall located in Gansu were built with reeds and willows rammed with sand. These sections of the Great Wall are mainly located in the desert area in China, like Luobupo area in Xinjiang and Yumenguan in Gansu.

Great Wall in Gansu Province

The construction material of these sections is due to the special climate and natural condition as solid stone is very hard to find and bricks are short of earth. These areas are well known for its lack of rainfall, with an annual rainfall less than scores of millimeters and exposed rocks and sand all over the place. Hardly any plants survive out here. Those which survive in the water-rich areas are nothing but reed and willow. Because the earth out here is not fit for building the wall and it is hard to build the wall with only sand, so the border people cleverly used the natural condition out here and mixed the sand with the reed and willows while building the Great Wall.

According to observation on site, the technique of building the Great Wall with reed and willow involves: first of all, cut abundant amount of reeds and willows from where they grew; then put a layer of the reeds and willows where the Great Wall was located, and on top of the reeds and willows added the mixture of sand and stone, in repeating this way, the Great Wall was erected in the end. Every layer of the reed and willow is about 5cm and sand and stone about 20cm. If the Great Wall needed to be built about 5 meters high, it would take about 20 layers of the mixture of reed and willow as well as sand. The construction of the Great Wall was used to defend the Mongolian rivalry and to build the Great Wall in this way can also achieve the same goal. However, this kind of Great Wall is not fire-free. But fortunately, the Mongolian tribes held very dear of the rule that no one is to set fire on the grassland. According to legends, the one who set fire on the grassland would be sentenced to death in fire. This kind of unique Great Wall built with reed and willow can still be found in the deserts in China.

What the most interesting is that there are many stories, legends aroused during the building period.

Jiayuguan Great Wall

The Wall Stabilizing Brick
For the story of wall stabilizing brick, it is about Jiayuguan Pass. It tells that during the Ming Dynasty, there was a workman called Yi Kaizhan. He got very famous for his smartness. People always called him as mathematician. Before building Jiayuguan Pass, he calculated that it would take exactly 99,999 bricks to build. At that time, the supervisor did not believe him and said that if calculated wrong, all the workmen will suffer from the heavy labor. After this elegant project is finished, there was one brick left behind the Xiwong city gate. After seeing this, the supervisor got very happy and ready to punish the workmen. But, Yi Kaizhan said that if the brick has a tiny move, it would cause the whole project to collapse. After that, the brick remained in place and was never moved. Until now, tourists could find the brick on the tower of the pass.

Goats Carry the Bricks
Measuring about nine meters high, Jiayuguan Pass is elegant project housing ten towers with different shapes and abundant buttresses. During that time, it was very difficult for the construction workers. Under the poor condition without lifting equipment, the workers had to carry the bricks with hand and shoulder. After firing the bricks, workers used oxcarts to carry them to the pass and then had to pass them up onto the wall by manpower. Although there are many workers were sent out, it was still a hard job. However, one day, there was a shepherd boy brought his goats to feed alongside this construction. After seeing the laborious workers, he suddenly aroused an idea. He took off his girdle, tied a brick on each end and put the girdle over the back of a goat. After that, he patted the goat. The goat went on carried the bricks down the road. After seeing this, all the workers became pleasant. They adopted the ideas and carried large number of bricks onto the Great Wall.

After hearing the two legends, would you like to have a closer experience?

History and Legend of Yumenguan Pass

Everyone is very familiar with the Yumenguan Pass but do not get the detail information of this section of the Great Wall. To get more about the background culture of it, I would like to lead you to walk into its background legend.

Yumenguan Great Wall

Original Transportation in Yumenguan
In China, Yumenguan Great Wall has the first name called Small Square City. Later its name was changed. It is said that in the past years, there are many caravans passed through a post in the west of Small Square City in Gansu Province. During that time, all the caravans are carrying about the precious jades. Adding the variety of terrains and hard locations, it is very hard to have a perfect transportation. What the most dangerous is that there are swamps, valleys, forests and fields of wild grasses growing everywhere. Especially during the hot summer, in order to get rid of the summer heat, these caravans always choose the night to transport. For the horses, they always get lost in the dark terrain. People are also unfamiliar with the dark road. So, the post gets the name of Horse Losing the Way.

Origin of Yumenguan Pass Great Wall
During the transportation journey, it is very easy to get lost. One day, there was a man got lost and he did not know how to get rid of the dark. When he is stuck in the losing, one goose appeared shouting, 'honk, honk, give me food, honk, honk, take me out'. Once heard this, the young man understood its meaning that this goose was hungry. So, he gave food and water to this goose. This goose led him safely to his destination, Small Square City. But, one day, the caravan lost himself again in the same place. The goose dropped on the caravan and said, 'honk, honk, led you out if you inlay jade on the pass'. Only the young man got what the goose said and he told his leader that they should inlay a luminous black green jade on the top of Small Square City. But, the leader refused. So, the very same caravan got lost and died of thirst.

End of the Story
For the black condition of transportation, the same young man has been rescued two times repeated the words of the goose, this time the leader followed and he chose the best and largest luminous black green jade to inlay on the top of the pass. At last, when the night falls, the brilliant rays that the jade sent out could be clearly seen from the far distance. It offered a great chance for the transportation.

Now, you have got why it was called Jade Gate Pass (Yumenguan).

Labor Force of Great Wall

As the world wonder, Great Wall always bring much surprise for the long-distance buildings, large scale and wild locations as well as the heavy materials - Bricks and the Stones. Every time climbed the Great Wall in China, you may ask the same question: how they were built such magnificent project. How many labors contributed on this project? How many materials were used in the Great Wall? Today, I will lead you to know the labor force.

Labor Force of Great Wall

Magnificent Project for Ancient People
As we all know, Great Wall experienced profound history, deep culture and was regarded as the world wonder. Another point is that Great Wall is a wonder that the ancient Chinese laboring people created under the poor-economy condition. All the laboring woks and buildings just depend on the manpower. It is said that the man is the machine during the ancient China. Among the magnificent Great Wall construction, there were millions of people contributed on the deep mountains and steep valleys. What the most important is that there are many and many workers lost their lives facing the dangerous works.

Three Groups Labor Force during Great Wall Construction
It is said that during the Great Wall building construction, the labor force was divided into three main groups including the soldiers, common people and criminals. According to the historical data, the criminals were rented as the slaves to do the serious work. Since the Qin Dynasty, the Great Wall construction has become a very large scale project. The emperor - Qinshihuang ordered millions of soldiers to finish this project. It is of course that the soldiers made up of the main construction. During the Qin Dynasty, over 300,000 soldiers made contribution to the construction. It took about nine years to finish the heavy work. For the millions of common people, they were ordered to build the wall. Just the Northern Qi's wall required over 500,000 common people to contribute. However, the criminals are regarded as the slaves receiving punishment during the construction. They were ordered to take turns patrolling the wall, while at night, building and extending the wall. According to the ancient laws, these criminals were forced to do the work for4 years.

Dangerous Condition
With the Great Wall construction becoming more and more serious, more and more common people were contributed in. Most of these people are man or boys. Even some children were ordered to do this work. Especially during the Wei-jin and Southern and Northern dynasties, there was almost no man engaged in the farming. The women were frightened to have a boy. The widows dared not to marry a woman. Also, the Great Wall led to large number of death and injuries. It is the common phenomenon that the women lost their sons, husbands.

We just appreciate the modern magnificent project and the background should lead our attention. We should protect the treasure housing blood and sweat as well as lives!

Density of Simatai Great Wall

Density is another feature of the Great Wall at Simatai. The nearest watch towers are only 43.8 meters away from each other, the farthest ones about 600 meters, with an average distance of 100-200 meters. According to the provisions of the Ming Dynasty, the watch tower should be built every 500 meters on the Great Wall, so this section of the Great Wall is an exception.

Simatai Great Wall

All refers to the watchtowers and the construction forms peculiar variety. From the exterior view, watchtowers have monocular floor, three-eye tower, four-eye tower and five-eye tower; a single floor, double floor and the three floor. They are hollow fortresses, in different sizes and different form, according to the garrison of the rank level, the number and the terrain the watch towers were respectively built. The internal structure is a brick masonry structure, housing a single room, double room, multi room; the room layout looks like a "field", "well" word; the roof is the most changeful, flat dome roof, octagonal caisson roof, covered bucket top; even the doors and windows are novel and chic with side door, middle door, brick and stone, and exquisite carved granite on the stone gate.

This is rare and precious relics in the Great Wall history. Simatai section of the Great Wall houses fairy tower and Wangjing Watchtower - two representative watch towers. Wangjing Watchtower is the highest point of Great Wall at Simatai with a commanding elevation, 986 meters above sea level, a hollow three-eye tower, two story brick structure. When the day is sunny, Beijing City can be seen from here, hence the name of Wangjing. Wangjing tower offers a panoramic view of the magnificent mountain. The fairy building is the most beautiful structure in the hillside. The inner arch was built with brick, three paths, ten archways gate. The center top is brick octagonal caisson, built with four brick columns. Visitors gently singing inside can hear euphonious echo. The beautiful lotus flower relief on the archway. If it is not defense facilities, it will make for a fairy pavilion. In addition, the wall structure is more exquisite, full of change. Due to the terrain and the military, the wall is divided into the single wall, double wall and the barrier wall, stone and brick mixed masonry, arrow hole.

Did Great Wall Serve as Territory Border

Most of the time, the Great Wall did not serve as the border, especially during Ming Dynasty. In Ming dynasty, the Mongolian people still believed that they are the masters of Chinese people. The main reason for that is because they once ruled the inner land before they were forced back outside the Great Wall. They had ruled the inner land for over a hundred years. They were overthrown by the farmer army led by Zhuyuanzhang and after that they had to get back to their former territory - that is located outside the Great Wall. However, the Mongolian people still did not admit the loss of the rule of China. For quite a long time, they still used the Yuan Dynasty. So if the Mongolian people did not think of them as outlandish people, then the Great Wall was not border at all.

Great Wall of China

From another perspective, the Chinese dynasty also did not deem the Great Wall as a border. The reason lies in the fact that there was a vast land located outside the Great Wall, and the land also belonged to the feudal dynasty. So it is impossible to treat the Great Wall as border. In Ming dynasty, there were a bunch of departments set up for the defense of the Great Wall and there were a few of them situated outside the Great Wall, including Liaoning, Daning and Wanquan sections of the Great Wall. In the beginning of Ming dynasty, the government set up a series of administrative departments in Liaoning and Inner Mongolia to the purpose of the defense of the Great Wall. Those administrative departments were scattered across the northern area of China.

All of the above-mentioned facts lead to a conclusion that the Great Wall did not serve as the border, both in the eyes of the Mongolian people and the Chinese feudal emperors. Most of the time, Ming dynasty held a tight reign over the northern area outside the Great Wall. The Ming government used to take a series of effective measures to enhance its administration for the areas outside the Great Wall. The most famous historic events include negotiation for peace and marriage of peace. Afterwards, the Great Wall was turned into a bustling market for trade between the Mongolian people and inner land people.

Overall, the Great Wall cannot be simply interpreted as a border of China.

Main Structure on Great Wall

Great Wall is the main part of this defense system. It was built in the lofty mountains and steep hills or Plains and obstacles, according to need of terrain and defense function and construction. In the plain or fortified place the wall is built very tall and sturdy, and in the alpine built low and narrow, in order to save manpower and cost. Even some of the steep sections are built in place which is hard to approach, like the Juyongguan, Badaling, Shanxi, Gansu and other areas of the Great Wall, with an average of about seven or eight meters high; from the bottom to the top of the wall thickness of about six or seven meters, a width of four or five meters. At the top of the wall, it is arranged in the inner side, more than one meter high, to prevent the soldiers while patrolling from dropping off the wall. Lateral side is set with crenel wall, 2 meters high. The upper crenel wall set at the mouth, the lower part of a fire hole and grind stone hole, to watch the enemy and shot through, or rolling stones down.

Great Wall

The city pass is very important, located in the favorable defensive terrain with very little force to resist the powerful invaders, vividly explaining the importance of pass city. Along the Great Wall the city is big or small. Near some big pass city are more than ten small pass cities on the mountain near the customs, common components of the Great Wall defense engineering construction system. Some important Pass City has several lines, such as in the area beyond Shanhaiguan Pass. The north of Badaling is the most important defense of Juyongguan sentinel. Beacon Tower is one of the most important parts of the Great Wall defense. Its role is to act as transmitting military facilities. Beacon Tower is used for the transmission of information which has been around for a long time. Transfer method is burning smoke during the day, setting the fire at night (because the daytime sunlight is very strong, the fire is not easy to see), night light visible from far away. This way of transmitting information is very scientific and very rapid method. There are some ways to signal the number of the invaders with smoke and fire, to enhance the alarm effect.

Overall, the Great Wall is more than just a long wall, but a complicated engineering feat.

Water and Great Wall

It is no secret at all that the Great Wall was built upon lofty hills along the northern stretch of China. So it is kind of hard for some to believe that water has something to do with the Great Wall, like the flood and river. However, according to a study related to the Great Wall, there are many sections of the Great Wall which have to cross some lowlands.

Shuiguan Great Wall

Although the Great Wall was equipped with a series of facilities and structures to prevent the water from eroding the wall, it is inevitable to keep the wall away. Aside from the rain water, the maintenance of the Great Wall has much to do with the water. It is said that many sections of the wall which have been penetrated by water. One way of dealing with this issue is to build some towers to distribute the water out of the wall. There is a section of the Great Wall called Liujiakou located in Hebei territory, which has a huge central archway built on the wall to help pass the water. To keep the Great Wall in good condition and keep the enemies away, the Great Wall builders went out of their way to deal with the water erosion which posed a big threat to the defense of the Great Wall.

In addition, there is another structure built on the wall to prevent the water from eroding the wall. It is called Shuiguan. Such structure can still be found at Juyongguan section. The Shuiguan played a key role in keeping the water from penetrating the wall. By the way, the other complex water gates are also equipped with facilities to enhance the protection of the wall. The most famous feature of them is the multiple openings found at the bottom of the wall at some sections. Today, many of the openings have been well restored and repaired to its original glory. Some remains which are well preserved can still be found at some sections of the Great Wall. Moreover, there are still some other facilities used to facilitate the prevention of the Great Wall. there are some pointed buttresses found by the wall, which are believed to be used to break the ice flow and connect the bed of the river. In this way, the Great Wall would be free of the water erosion and flood. Overall, the Great Wall is related to the water.

What Exactly Great Wall Reveals

Hailed as one of the most splendid engineering feat in the world, the Great Wall of China means more than its name tells. There is more to it than meets the eye. Usually, the name of the Great Wall has created much misunderstanding between western and Chinese people. There is plenty more sides about the Great Wall which have not been revealed.

Great Wall of China

To better explain what exactly what the Great Wall stands for, it is best to describe what it does not stand for. Generally, at the mention of the Great Wall, some may mistake it as one Great Wall, but in fact, the Great Wall consists of many different sections spanning across the northern area of China. As it goes without saying, the Great Wall was not built in a single dynasty and built at different areas, so it is next to impossible to connect the wall as a whole. There are a wide variety of sections of the Great Wall snaking across the northern area of China. Moreover, the Great Wall is not all about a pile of bricks and stone, the Great Wall refers to a well advanced defensive system. There are lots of defensive structures built alongside with the wall, like the watch towers, beacon towers and many other kinds of additions. To this day, there are a large number of components of the wall lost along the way, but there are many parts of the structure well preserved on the wall, showing the Great Wall is more than just a pile of bricks and stone.

By the way, the complicated system of the Great Wall is filled with trenches, towers of various shapes and sizes, gates, fortresses and barracks. They are well kept to this day, in quantity, scale, architectural diversity. Sometimes the Great Wall is connected at some sections by the border, other times, the wall is divided apart from each other. Although, the Great Wall is called the Great Wall of Genghis Khan, however, the wall was built mainly at inner land of northern China. There are also some sections of the wall existing in other countries, like in Russia and Korea. Overall, the Great Wall of China runs along the vast northern area of China, overlooking Yellow River and into the edge of the sea. The Chinese people are so proud of the Great Wall, so in the hearts of the Chinese, the Great Wall is called Wan Li Chang Cheng, meaning ten-thousand miles Great Wall.

Weapons Used to Defend the Great Wall

In Chinese history, the weapons used to defend the Great Wall varied greatly throughout the different dynasties. It is mainly divided into cold weapon and powder weapon. Prior to Ming Dynasty, the weapons used on the Great Wall were all about long-range spikes, arrows, archery and the like. When the enemies attacked the Great Wall, the spikes were used to hold back the enemies close and the arrows and archery were used to attack the enemies afar.

Weapons used to Defend Great Wall

In Ming Dynasty, the weapon was improved greatly, and the most recognizable sign is the use of the powder weapon, including Huochong, and Gangpao, which were widely used on the Great Wall while holding back the Mongolian attackers. Chong refers to a kind of pipe-like gun which can be dated back to Song Dynasty and was used to attack with bullet. During Yuan Dynasty, this kind of weapon was improved greatly and built in large scale. In Ming dynasty, all kinds of canyons were called the general. There is a story related to this tradition. At the beginning of Ming dynasty, there was a man called Jiaofang who sent a pipe-shaped weapon to Ming emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. The emperor promised him if the weapon did work, then he would be rewarded handsomely and the weapon would be named after him as well. And as it turned out, the weapon was very helpful in the battles, so the emperor held the end of the bargain and named the weapon the general.

The canyons in Ming Dynasty were all loaded before battles. They were named differently, according to the sizes and shapes of them. There were many canyons imported from Dutch. During the late period of Ming dynasty, the small fiber canyon made its debut which was invented by Portuguese. According to the records written by Qijiguang, there were a wide variety of powder weapons back in the day during Ming dynasty. The weapons were used to deal with different kinds of army, some used to attack the rivalry, some infantry. In Qinhuangdao, there is a different stone canyon found. This kind of weapon was highly praised by Qijiguang and he commented that the weapon is not only cheap but also very powerful. The stone canyon played a key role in defending the Great Wall in history. The weapons used on the Great Wall bear testament to the evolution of Chinese weaponry.

Watch Tower of Great Wall

The Watch Tower of Great Wall is also known as Dilou in Chinese, built higher on the wall. According to studies in Tangshan Province of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, we found that the enemy has solid and hollow towers. In Qian'an, Qianxi, Zunhua, there are 662 watch towers, with only 3 solid towers, the rest are hollow towers. Base on prefabricated strip stones, the wall is surrounded by rectangular bricks staggered on top, the towers from base have obvious contracture, and the wall is in the shape of a trapezoid on the narrow ridges. On the top of the wall is added with crenels, together with the observation hole. The three solid towers are preserved more complete.

Watch Tower on Great Wall

In the territory of Tangshan, among 559 hollow towers, more complete preservation is only about 20%. Hollow towers is built on the Great Wall, surrounded by windows where the soldiers can live inside, offering storage of the weapons, ammunition to fight the invading enemy. Hollow towers are an important symbol of the gradual strengthening of defense system of the Great Wall. The founder of hollow tower is Ming Dynasty's Qi Jiguang, composed of three parts. The lower base is a large stone, level with the same high walls, the middle part is hollow part, some with brick arched openings, interconnected with rooms, some with wooden pillars and wood plates, outer featuring thick walls, forming a layer or two layers of large space for soldiers, storage, forage and weapons.

The upper top of the majority of the watchtower is reserved for the soldiers to shelter from the wind and rain, but also some space is turned into a platform for smoke, fire alarm, without a watchtower. On top of the hole in the tower, soldiers use the rope ladder, and some set aside in brick wall for a person to pass the brick or stone steps. The central hollow part of arrow windows and doors are open, the number varies with the enemy general size. Each layer of the open arrows windows, around the two arrow window a large enemy units, each equipped with four or five arrows windows. The nearby towers of Great Wall, according to arrow window number, are called as "Three-hole Tower", "four-hole Tower", "five-hole tower". The Great Wall's towers are also independent from the wall - we call the piers of the wall. In the west of Xifengkou, the pier structure of hollow tower is basically the same.

The Earliest Great Wall in China

The Great Wall was built with thousands of years of history, based on the past history, the Great Wall scholars continue to debate about which section is the earliest Great Wall ever built in China. There are mainly two kinds of views: one is the Chu Kingdom Great Wall was built the earliest; another kind of view is, the Spring and Autumn period Great Wall is the first Great Wall in China, some people even think that the Chu Great Wall does not exist at all. Sima Qian's book Shiji is worthy of study, but the record of Great Wall is not written in his book, so it is not sufficient to prove if Qi Great Wall is the earliest.

Great Wall in China

Many Great Wall records can be identified, from the 16th year of Emperor Chu reign (656 years ago), they already began to use records, and has found a large number of well preserved ruins to prove the history of the Great Wall and to clarify the distribution of Chu Great Wall. And it can be said that the Chu Great Wall is the earliest. The Chu Great Wall has left a large number of multilayer fortification sites from the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. There are some evidences to show that the Great Wall built in later times was all influenced by the Chu Great Wall. For example, the garrison sentinel is necessary for the Great Wall, so the Qin, Han, Ming Dynasty the Great Wall also inherited and used a lot of the same form.

The construction principle of Chu Great Wall is to fully use the local conditions and to obtain raw materials from local surrounds. From the actual situation of the relics, built along the Funiu Mountain, stone wall accounted for the vast majority, and all featuring the stone architecture. Now those several rammed earth wall, because it is not built with stone, only some debris and remains are left. Historical records of the Chu Great Wall show the Chu Great Wall used to be called Square City. It may be related to the people's ideas. As already explained, the overall contour near the Great Wall is square or rectangular, some parts by the terrain constraints are irregular, but the traces show the Great Wall was built with square shape. This is probably because the ancient people firmly believed in Fengshui.

The roof of Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest adopted the deep blue glazed tiles, and this color symbolized sky. If you say Tiananmen Rostrum is the symbol of China, I say the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest is the symbol of this immortal city – Beijing.

Echo Wall

Besides Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest, there is an interesting place in Temple of Heaven, which is the Echo Wall. Around Imperial Heavenly Vault, there is wall in the width of 0.9 meters, which is the Echo Wall. If you speak to the wall in a whisper, people on the other side will hear you clearly, just need to against to the wall. Shooting in the center of Circular Mound Altar, you will hear the bright and heavy from the deep of earth. The sound seems come from the heart of earth or sky, so people named it as Heavenly Heart Stone. All these proved that the ancient Chinese people can put acoustic principle into practice in 500 years ago.

There is another effect of dividing the lake into two lakes, that is present the water to the sides and back of mountain and shaped the pattern of surrounded by mountains and girdled by a river.

The Long Corridor, also famous for the Painting Walkway, is the longest gallery corridor in the world. Looking up, there are different stories painting on the top, most of them are famous for Chinese, such as the 'A Dream in Red Mansion', 'Pilgrimage to the West', etc. I would say the Long Corridor is one of the most famous and characteristic spots in Summer Palace, as well as the Tower of the Buddhist Incense.

Tower of the Buddhist Incense

End the Long Corridor, it is the Tower of the Buddhist Incense, is the symbol of this imperial garden and the highest building in it. How interesting, it is an eight-façade tower, built imitated from the Six Harmony Tower in Hangzhou, is the center of the whole garden. It is said the Empress Dowager Cixi always pay respect to Buddha. Now, it is an ideal place to overlook beautiful Kunming Lake and the marvelous scenes.

Seventeen Arch Bridge

Not far away from the Tower of the Buddhist Incense, it is the Seventeen Arch Bridge which is the longest bridge in Summer Palace, is 150 meters in length and 8 meters in width. The bridge was built imitated from the Lugou Bridge in Beijing, and the special characteristic of the bridge is the stone lion on every pillar. Every pillar has several lions in different shapes, and the lions of whole bridge are different, and cannot be able to count its number. Anyone interests it all can come here to try to count it, it is very interesting! And the bridge connects to the South Lake Island where is place praying for rain in the arid year for Empress Dowager Cixi.

Yes, the three spots are the most famous and typical in Summer Palace, but always crowded with visitors, and we all like to find a quiet and beautiful place, so we along the bank of Kunming Lake to West Causeway.

History and Appearance of Hutong in Beijing

Hutong is one of the culture marks of Beijing and I was interested in it. This time I got the chance to walk through the narrow hutongs (with long history) to experience the real local life in Beijing. My tour began at Old Drum Tower Street and ended to Prince Gong's Mansion (via many historical sites and old hutongs including Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Yandaixiejie, Yinding Bridge).

Bell and Drum Tower in Beijing

Bell and Drum Tower are the two landmarks of old Beijing located in the city center. There are only about 100 meters distance the two towers. The Drum Tower is more beautiful than the Bell Tower. I did not pay 20 yuan for the entrance tickets instead just stand at the foot of the towers and took some panoramic photos. Walk along the street, within 10 minutes, I got to the famous hutong – Yandaixiejie.

Yandaixiejie - Old Hutong with Long History

Yandaixiejie also named as Tobacco Pipe Lane, is one of the oldest streets in Beijing. Ethnic shops and various bars and cafes are opened here which attract lots of tourists from in and abroad. In the past, in this hutong there were only tobacco pouches and smoking sets were sold and nowadays, it has been rebuilt as a commercial street where there are more than 60 stores specializing in the sale of tobacco pipes, lanterns, kites, tea sets, curios, national costumes, folk craftwork and traditional needlework.

Are you fond of the origin of its name Yandaixiejie? Here are two reasons. During the Qing Dynasty, people lived in Beijing liked tobaccos very much, which caused the increasing demand of tobacco pipe. Therefore, more and more tobacco pipe shops were opened in the street. Another reason is that it is said the Yandaixiejie looks like a tobacco pipe in its shape - its gracile street is the tobacco pipe while the entrance in the east end is its mouth and the west entrance is the hollow. Therefore, Yandaixiejie got its name.

At the end of Yandaixiejie there is standing another historical site called Yinding Bridge. In the history, it was very much like a silver ingot upside down, so hence the name. Now it is a narrow channel joining Qianhai Lake and the Houhai Lake, the hub of Shichhai area with surrounding quiet hutongs. Standing on the bridge and viewing the lotus in summer has now become one of the most beautiful scenery in downtown Beijing.

Went on along Qianhai Lake with gentle breeze and wander through hutongs, we got the destination of Prince Gong's Mansion. Along the street, there are a lot of rickshaws for hutong tour. And the drivers will tell you much about the history of the old hutongs.

The Attractive West Lake and Its Specialty

There is an old saying in China: there is a paradise in heaven, while there are Suzhou and Hangzhou on earth. The beauty of Hangzhou is shown as not only the charming natural landscape, but also the abundant tangible cultural heritage.
West Lake

Speaking of Hangzhou, the West Lake is a place must be mentioned. West Lake locates in western Hangzhou, which is the downtown of this city. Because of the glamorous landscape and many historic interests, Hangzhou is renowned as “Paradise on Earth”. The famous poet Su Shi of Song Dynasty wrote a line about this city: 天下西湖三十六,就中最美是杭州 (among the 36 West Lake in the country, Hangzhou West Lake is most beautiful one). Hangzhou West Lake has ten famous scenic spots, known as “Ten Scenes of West Lake”. Every spot of them is attractive and beautiful.

Another famous scenery, Lingyin Temple, lies on the north of West Lake. It is one of the ten most famous ancient Buddhist temples in China, also regarded as a part of West Lake scenery. If you are taking a trip to West Lake, it is strongly recommended to visit this quiet and pleasant temple.

Besides of West Lake, Hangzhou is also famed for Xihu Longjing green tea all over the world. Xihu Longjing is one of the ten most famous Chinese teas, owns a history over 1200 years. Longjing green tea, also called Dragon Well green tea, is mainly produced in Xihu Village in Hangzhou City. Major tea gardens locate in the southwest around the village. Due to the mild climate, abundant raindrops, and the advantaged natural condition, the Longjing tea produced here is delicate and fragrant, and taste more brisk and mellow. Longjing green tea from West Lake is classified into five types according to the origin place, including Shifeng, Longjing, Yunqi, Hupao, and Meijiawu. Among them Shifeng Longjing is the best. Analysis from researches shows a result that Longjing tea contains a larger amount than other teas of amino acid, catechinic acid, chlorophyll and Vitamin C and so on. Therefore it has more health benefits for human body.

Longjing Tea

Except visiting West Lake and drinking Xihu Longjing tea, a trip in Hangzhou shall not miss the delicious local foods, such as West Lake Fish in Sweet Sour Source (西湖醋鱼), Beggar's Chicken (叫化童鸡), Dongpo Pork (东坡肉), Fried Shrimps with Longjing Tea (龙井虾仁), all of which are the traditional dishes of Hangzhou. Being made of fresh shrimps and Longjing green tea picked around Qing Ming, this dish is delicate, tender and delicious. You will definitely be impressed.

Usually, ecdemic friends like to know the meals of capital people. Of course, capital people always have meals. Consider what Beijingers eat on earth carefully, the question really puzzled me in long terms. No one clear this question.

Owing to the history reason, Beijing cuisine gathers the every success of Chinese cuisines, has its own characteristic but no style of cooking. The most characteristic of Beijing cuisine is it divided into court catering culture, literati and officialdom catering culture and ordinary catering culture. Every stratum has their catering culture, no mix, no disordered. The distinguishing feature of hundred years ago always can be found easily in today. No matter the most luxurious catering culture or most democratic catering culture, you will have chance to taste Beijing. The flourish of luxurious food is as well as the ordinary. Beijing, a complex city to taste the various delicious foods, is ideal place to spend much more money on luxury cater and less money on snacks with unique style.

As well as the cate, Beijingers have fortissimo containment which was cultivated by history. They have no discrimination to ecdemic and ecdemic foods, because of their strong confidence. In fact, now Beijing people are more opened than others in dietary ways. Besides traditional Beijing cuisine, they change their taste between Suchuan Cuisine, Yunnan Cuisine, etc. They never insist their catering culture sedulously.

For tourists in Beijing, the Beijing restaurants are strange much, without any reason. Gormandize travelers always find these restaurants with unique style, delicious foods or characteristics before tour; less cultured people just want to find a restaurant to fulfill their stomach. This kind of action is very adventurous for less cultured tourists. For example, same price, Beijing has two kinds of restaurants. One you want to pack another for next meal, and the other you doubt that what bad things happened between the cook and you. Even people has stayed in Beijing for a long time, they are always carful for every meal in case of becoming an adventure.

Get ready of cuisines for your Beijing tour!

Beautiful Shichahai & Bustling Wangfujing Commercial Street

Do not know if the profound Chinese Complex or others emotion, seems every Chinese who never have chance to Beijing has a small wish to look at the imperial city with reverence. Beijing, the old city with long history, leaves us many sincerity, sacred, solemn, familiar, leisurely, or helpless. What do you think of Beijing?
Old people said reading history let people wise. The Beijing in my sight is sagacious, and lively. Shuttling back and forth in the old hutongs, always pieces of historical pictures flash before me. The places known in book still silently guards Beijing after so many years.

Beautiful Shichahai
Beautiful Shichahai

I like Shichahai, because it has rich culture and history, it was the place gathering temples in history, famous as the Nine Nunneries and One Temple, so named Shichahai. In Yuan Dynasty, it was the start of North-south Great Canal, with wide water area and beautiful views. At that time, the shipping industry was flourishing, which drove the area of Gulou Street to the bustling business area. The Yinding Bridge stretching across lake, built at the connection of Qianhai and Houhai. Standing on bridge, it is easily to enjoy the magnificent views of Houhai and Xishan Mountain, so it was reputed to the Yindingguanshan which is one of the Yanjing Small Eight Views. Shichahai area is also a traditional scenic spot keeps the original folk customs and the characteristics of old Beijing. And now Shichaihai has become the best place to boating in summer and skating in winter.

Bustling Wangfujing Street
Bustling Wangfujing Street

I also like Wangfujing area as vigor as Beijingers. Beijing culture reveals in everywhere, including this street. In Liao and Jin Dynasties, Wangfujing was just an unknown village, became more crowded in Yuan Dynasty, and it was built with ten prince mansions in Ming Dynasty, the Wangfujing began to task shape. The busy people get rid of burden at night, to enjoy the leisure culture at Wangfujing. Various kinds of delicious smells spread all over the street, stimulate the taste bud of people, it is a place bearing the history and full of vitality.

The winter of Beijing has less bustling and irritable, more quiet and light. After the article about Beijing culture, have already to trip in Beijing?

As widely known, the Spring Festival is the most important festival in China and it lasts until the Lantern Festival – on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. What do you know about the Lantern Festival in China? Are you interested in how Chinese people celebrate this traditional festival? Let me show you:

Lantern Riddles

Lantern riddles is a unique civic form of ethnic style in China and this traditional activity began to spread since the ancient times. During the Lantern Festival, on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, each household hang the lanterns, setting off fireworks. Later, there was someone wrote the riddles on slips of paper, paste in the bright lights of the lanterns for people to guess. Since the riddles could enlighten wisdom and cater to the festive atmosphere, so the large number of people took part in the activity and response, and then this gradually became the indispensable program of the Lantern Festival.

Enjoy the lanterns is another traditional activity for the festival. This custom began from the Han Dynasty and lasts for thousand years until now. Lantern festival unprecedented developed in Tang Dynasty. At that time, the capital city Chang'an has a population of one million and it reached the world's largest urban affluent society. Under the personal initiative of the emperor, lantern festival became more and more luxurious. In the middle period of the Tang Dynasty, it has developed into a universal carnival. Professional Service in Lianhuashan Ski Resort

Lianhuashan Ski Resort is a large and inexpensive ski park that is located in Shunyi District, only about 30 kilometers away from Beijing Capital Airport. With convenient transportation, here usually gather a lot of ski lovers during the weekends. Even in weekdays, you can still find many tourists skiing here.

This is my second time skiing and I like the feeling down the slopes very much. Look at my equipments, you must think I am a professional skier, however actually I am a beginner. Now let me introduce the surroundings of the snow world. As one of the most popular ski resorts in Beijing, Lianhuashan Ski Resort provides a variety of entertainment facilities such as Snow Circle, Motorcycle on Snow Land, Sleigh Drawn by Dogs, Football on Snow Land, etc. Besides these entertainment facilities, there also have Russian-villa style guestrooms and a green ecological restaurant which offer chafing dish and Korea Cuisine. The newly decorated ecological restaurant and Korea Barbecue restaurant can accommodate 800 persons simultaneously. It is really a good relaxing place of Beijing in-season.

Light fog on top of the mountain

The weather today is not very good, with light fog, so that standing at the foot, I could not see the top of the mountain clearly. It's time for lunch, but on the snow land there are still a lot of people. Everyone here enjoy a happy skiing time with sweet smile on the face, even though uncollected fall.

Skillful coach teaching skiing

Not all tourists here are good at skiing, most of them are like me, just the beginner. In order to ensure the safety and meet the needs for beginners, in Lianhuashan Ski Resort, you could find many professional coaches. Usually they are standing on the snow land dress in coach suits. Seeing you standing on the ground or with poor ski stills, they may come and ask you whether you need to learn from them. If this is your first time for skiing and fear for tumble, then hire a coach to teach you will be a better and ideal way. The fee for the coach is 180yuan per person per hour. Although a little expensive, after an hour learning, you could understand the basic skills for skiing and could try to ski in the primary and the secondary ski routes, worthwhile.

Happy Skiing Time in Lianhuashan Ski Resort

During winter seasons skiing is one of the most popular sports and theme tours in Beijing. Also in Beijing there are a lot of ski resorts with advanced facilities and comfortable environment. According to the limit time, we choose Beijing Lianhuashan Ski Resort, which is nearest to Beijing downtown.

Take bus No.918, after about 2 hours driving, get off at Liangshanzhuang Station, we go to the destination – Lianhuashan Ski Resort. Walking along the road lead to the snow world, we saw some pedlars selling gloves, hats and glasses for skiers to keep warm. In order to keep warm while skiing, I also spent 20 Yuan to buy a hat.

Main Gate of Lianhuashan Ski Resort

Lianhuashan Ski Resort was opened to the public in 2003 and it is one of the biggest ski resorts in Beijing. To accommodate the crowds, here built a large parking lot, almost 6000 square meters. It is said that during the weekends and the holidays, here usually full of cars.

Entering the main entrance, looking around the white mountain and the pure white snow, I felt excited. I cannot wait to change my clothes and enjoy the skiing time. At 10:00am, here has already gathered some ski lovers. Some of them are very good at skiing. The excellent skills and the fast speed really impressed me. How I wish I could ski freely like them!

Panoramic View of Lianhuashan Ski Resort

All the ski equipments were offered in Ski Service Center. It is big enough to accommodate nearly hundreds of people changing at the same time. Here you could find the ticket office, boots rental area, snowboards rental area, ski suits rental area, changing area and one ski equipment shop. The entrance ticket includes the fees for snowboards, ski sticks, ski boots, conveyor and the cable car. And also each person should pay 300 yuan as the deposit in security before getting the ski equipments. If needed, you could pay 30 yuan for ski suits and 10 yuan for the locker. As the beginners, it took us nearly half an hour to change our suits and put on the ski boots. Well, got all the ski equipments ready in the changing area, I found myself too fat to move. However, this did not reduce my enthusiastic of skiing. Carry the ski sticks and the heavy snowboards, come to the real snow world now!

When Christmas comes, every household will decorate with the Christmas colors: red Christmas flowers and candles; green Christmas tree.

Father Christmas

Well, talking about the Christmas, there are some key points. It is said that the Father Christmas was once a bishop of the city and was honored as the sainthood after his death. He is the old man wearing a red robe, hat, white-bearded. Every year at Christmas, he drove the deer sleigh from the North, entering each house by the chimney, loaded Christmas gifts in a sock hanging in the children's bedside or in front of the fire.

About the Christmas, there are a lot of things to say and the aim is that Merry Christmas and enjoy the excellent activities!

Red Leaves Festival in Fragrant Hills Park (2)

It is said that there are three stages enjoying the red leaves in Fragrant Hills Park. The first stage is from mid October to late October. All garden covers with green, yellow and red leaves, which seemed as if a colorful mountains picture. Wandering along the path, tourists will feel the magnificent natural scenery personally. The second stage is from late October to early November.

Red Leaves

If your aim here is only to enjoy the beautiful view of red leaves all around mountain, then you will feel disappointed. While entering the main entrance, you will find two frondent maple trees and they are the best ones in the whole park. Along the mountains there are some other varieties of trees with red leaves and climbing up, having a panoramic view, there appears red, yellow, green and grey, but non match up with them. So take full use of your camera here at the beginning to record the beautiful moment. Along the path to the Xianlu Peak, there are some vendors selling red leaves specimen which are much cheaper than the stores on the top of the hill. If interested in it, why not buy some home? Just the souvenirs!

Xianglu Peak

Of course for everyone, Xianglu Peak is the final destination which has an elevation of 557 meters. Clouds and mist often engulf its precipitously angled cliffs, which give the two large stone excrescences of the peak a resemblance to incense burners. Deep breath of fresh air for a while, just enjoy the brand view of the whole Beijing City.

Of course the best time to visit the park is late fall, when the smoke tree leaves turn red.  It consists of a natural pine-cypress forest, hills with maple trees, smoke trees and persimmon trees, as well as landscaped areas with traditional architecture and cultural relics however Fragrant Hills Park is popular for tourists not only for the Red Leaves Festival, but also because of its comfortable environment. All the year round, here attracts a lot of local citizens hiking and entertainment.

Red Leaves Festival in Fragrant Hills Park (1)

Have you ever heard of the Red Leaves Festival in Beijing? It is very popular among local citizens and holds in Fragrant Hills Park every late autumn. This year, the festival begins from Oct.12th and ends at Nov.11th. Today, we came here to enjoy the beautiful view.

In the early morning, through very heavy traffic, here has already gathered large numbers of tourists. In front of the ticket center there stand the long queue and it took us nearly 40 minutes to get the entrance tickets. Today is Wednesday, I could not imagine the situation here on weekends.

Fragrant Hills Park - Red Leaves Festival

Before getting into the park, we came to the sign board showing the map of the whole park to design our route. It also shows the good points to view the red leaves in the park. Then we entered and first in sight the Qinzheng Palace. It is the working place for Qianlong Emperor during his stay in Fragrant Hills. In front of the palace there planted two frondent maple trees. While gentle wind blowing, the yellow and red leaves flying and drop into the small pool. Many professional photography lovers came here to grasp the classic moment. Would you like to be a member of them?

Walking pass the Tranqulity Green Lake (Jingcui Lake), we went on through a small path. It is not crowded but really a good point to see the red leaves on the mountain. Red, yellow, green, brown, colorful and beautiful! With bright sunshine, blue sky and white clouds, sitting on the grass here to have a short rest and enjoy the view will be really nice! Our final destination is the top point – Xianglu Peak, so come on!

Bird Eye View of Beijing City

Considering our physical strength, we chose the route with fewer steps, however the steep slopes are also hard for walking. Walking left then turning right, not very long time my legs were trembling. Every ten minutes, I have to stop and take short rest. Thank god, after 2 hours hard working, we finally got to the Xianglu Peak. The temperature is only about 5 degrees Celsius but I was still drenched in sweat. While got to the top, I had no desire for the view but rest. Deep breath of fresh air for a while, I put my focus on the view around. In the middle there stands the stone tablet of Xianglu Peak. So many tourists there waiting to take pictures that I could not find the chance to take picture for the stone alone. Looking around, in the middle is the panoramic view of Beijing city. With the bright weather, I could see the CCTV Tower clearly, grand and impressive! The mountains around covering with red, green and yellow leaves, they are so colorful and stratified!

The scenery on Xianglu Peak deserves long time climbing. Also it is healthy climbing the hills in free time.

Prince Gong's Mansion Day Tour

Once heard that Prince Gong's Mansion is the back garden of the Forbidden City, the history of Qing Dynasty, today I came to enjoy the view of it. The scale is smaller than Summer Palace and the other to destinations, but it is still worth a visit and wander, if you have done all the other stuff. The tour here will be last about 2 hours.

Prince Gong's Mansion

The dwelling is a traditional courtyard mansion of a style that was so attractive to me. Two stone lions guard the main gate, and magnificent buildings stand to the fore of the mansion, with an elegant garden at the rear. It could be divided into two main parts – the residence and the garden. The living quarters stand within three sets of courtyards occupying a central, eastern and western situation and the construction and materials used are similar to those in the Forbidden City while the garden, surrounded by artificial mountains, known as Jincui Yuan, is of high standing on account of its layout and distinct design.

Artificial Lake

In the living quarters, there now display some precious antiques. Also there are some stores selling souvenirs, if you like, you could buy some home like I was. Arriving in the garden, a big lake caught me sight at first. In the middle of the lake there stands a pavilion. Wandering in the green path or sitting in the pavilion view the harmonious scenery, you will feel relax and comfortable. In the center of the garden, you will be absorbed by the artificial hills. Though not large, the garden contains more than 15 spots and the most popular one is the Fu Stele which is placed in a cave. The Chinese character 'fu' carved on the about 8-meter-long stele is a copy of the Emperor Kangxi's handwriting.

To help visitors gain a better understanding of the culture attaching to the mansion, the administration of Prince Gong's Mansion has converted Bat Hall into a teahouse. 70 RMB for the full tickets, visitors' program includes a full tour of the mansion, tea drinking, observing the exquisite art of the tea ceremony, sampling Beijing style titbits, and enjoying folklore performances, all of which evoke an enthusiastic response. But with limit travel time, we did not join this part.

It is a place really worthy of a visit and I can assure that every aspect puts the culture and life style of the Imperial China's elite into perspective. Really beautiful and delicate!

Panda House and Olympic Stadium Day Trip

Pandas in Beijing Zoo

One of the animals that have been linked with China, probably the most important one, is the panda. So during the tours in Beijing, everyone should not miss the chance to see this world animal. Today I visited Beijing Zoo to see the pandas in the afternoon however generally speaking I was very disappointed. From TV shows, the pandas look fat and cute. Sometimes the small ones are very naughty to climb up and down. In Beijing Zoo the Panda House is divided into two parts – the Asia Games Panda House and the Olympic Panda House. However today I saw, there are only 5 pandas living in the big house and they look lonely. Two of them were sleeping and the other three were sitting lazily. Is it because they have just having lunch? I don't know. Also one of them looks very weak and its feather fell off (especially the black feather around the eyes) which looks very horrible! May it got ill. During about 30 minutes tour in Panda House, I did not feel happy at all, on the other hand, I felt sad about the pandas although their living conditions are very good. Maybe it is better to let them back to nature at least the environment similar to the nature not like here just for tourists to take photos.

Olympic Stadiums

Luckily the next destination – Olympic Park make me feel relaxed and comfortable. I enjoyed my time here. The song "You and I" brought me back to the excellent open ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The park is vast so allow plenty of time to walk. It is an ideal place for wandering around, watching Chinese, and appreciating the amazing architecture of the Bird's Nest stadium and the Water Cube. Bird Nest enjoys a good to look around although it was a bit of a misty in the late afternoon. Large numbers of tourists walking on the square, taking photos and there are also some people flying beautiful kites. Of course I would not miss the chance to take beautiful photos in front of the Bird Nest and the Water Cube (the two symbol modern buildings of Beijing). For limit travel time, I did not visit the Forest Park.

If time allows, I advise you to visit the Olympic Park in the evening. With all lights on, red Bird Nest and blue Water Cube, there will appear the dreamlike scenery!

Lama Temple - Perfectly Preserved Lamasery in Beijing

Located in the city center, we arrived at this popular attraction at 9:00am easily by subway Line 2. While getting out of the subway station, standing on the street to the entrance of Lama Temple, we felt strong religious atmosphere. On both sides there are full of stores selling incense and amulet. The first day and the fifteenth day of a month are the best days for praying so on those days there must be full of tourists.

Lama Temple is open at 9:00am and today is Thursday, so it was not crowded in the early morning. The entrance fee is 25 RMB for adult and it is really worth the price. The entrance ticket even comes with a small CD which introduce about Lama Temple. I simply enjoy myself sightseeing as I am not there for praying and the architecture here is simply impressive. One word to summarize my feeling here is that "Fascinating insight into a Buddhist temple today".

Lama Temple in Beijing

Lama Temple is not very large which features five large halls and five courtyards (Hall of the Heavenly Kings, Hall of Harmony and Peace, Hall of Everlasting Blessings, Hall of the Dharma Wheel and Pavilion of Infinite Happiness) with beautifully decorative archways, upturned eaves and carved details. It also houses a treasury of Buddhist arts including sculptured images of gods, demons and Buddhas, as well as Tibetan-style murals. Hall of the Dharma Wheel and Pavilion of Infinite Happiness gave me a deep impression. With 5 gilded pagodas, Hall of the Dharma Wheel functions as a place for reading scriptures and conducting religious ceremonies. Every morning between 5:00am ~7:00am is the time for lamas reading. In the middle there stands a large, 6m high, gilded bronze statue of Tsong Khapa. Besides, the hall also contains a Five Hundred Arhat Hill, a carving made of red sandalwood with statues of the arhats made from five different metals - gold, silver, copper, iron and tin. The Pavilion of Infinite Happiness, the last main hall, is the highest hall of this temple. The large statue caught me eyes while entered the hall. The entire statue which is carved from a rare sandal tree is 26 meters (85 feet) in height, with eight meters (26 feet) buried under the ground. It is so huge that I have to look up to his face!

After visiting the 5 main halls, we go back the same way to the exit. Now 11:00am already and many religious come here to pray. For praying, in front of each hall, you had better light up 3 incenses but I do not know why. Tibetan chanting, incense, horns and drums and if you are so inclined, a marvelously spiritual experience.

In-depth Tour in Forbidden City

Forbidden City, the most famous and the representative attraction of Beijing deserves the high reputation, and it is really worth visiting for several times.

At 9:00 am we got to Tiananmen Square, early in the morning, here is already full of tourists in different colors. Through Tiananmen Tower, we got to the entrance of the Forbidden City. Although this is not the first time visiting Forbidden City, I was still attracted by its grand atmosphere. And thanks for the electronic guide device, I learnt much more about the history and the story about the Palace Museum.

Copper Lions

Through the entrance - Meridian Gate, we arrived at Taihe Gate. In front of the gate stand two copper lions. These two are the largest lions in Forbidden City. Through this gate, we arrived at the main subjects of Forbidden City - Hall of Supreme Harmony. It is the largest wooden structure palace in the Palace Museum which symbolizes the supreme sovereignty. In the sunny day, with resplendent and magnificent view, it is really spectacular. 18 bronze tripods surround the palace, 11 god animals on each corners of the roof top, all these implies the highest status of this palace. Here is the place for hold court by the emperors in ancient times and now you can still feel its power outside the palace. In front of the palace there are full of tourists. If you want to have a close look at the inner decorations and take some photos for remind, then you have to take some physical energy.

Behind the Hall of Supreme Harmony stand Hall of Central Harmony and Hall of Preserving Harmony, other two subject buildings in Forbidden City. Have you found anything interesting? Why in the big square, around the three palaces, there is not any tree here. This is because the emperors wanted to show the royal majesty and its power.

Palace of Heavenly Purity

Behind the three main palaces, on the axle wire is Palace of Heavenly Purity – the boundary of the outer court and inner court. Palace of Heavenly Purity is the living place for the emperors and during the daytime, the emperors of Qing Dynasty deal with the day-to-day conduct of public affairs. Above the throne hall is the most eye-catching plaque hanging "fair and square" written by the Qing Dynasty Emperor Shunzhi and behind the plaque is the possession of the densely built Crown Prince. At the time, the infighting of the throne between the Princes is quite intense. In order to alleviate this contradiction, since the Yongzheng reign he started to take a secret way to establish the Crown Prince - during his lifetime the emperor did not publicly establish crown prince instead secretly write the selected heir, one on the emperor's side; the other seal in the box and put it behind the plaque "fair and square". However, with the lack of the late Qing Dynasty royal heirs the secret built storage system was in name only.

With the limit travel time, we have to say goodbye to the magnificent Forbidden City. Thanks to the sunny weather, I took a lot beautiful photos here. And looking at the photos I have taken, I feel very proud. I am interested in Chinese history and I love here very much. Forbidden City is just like a history book telling me the detail information about the ancient China. I really enjoy myself here. Nice trip again in Beijing!

Beihai Park - Great Place for Leisure in Downtown Beijing

I like natural scenery much better so the tour to Beihai Park made me feel pleased and comfortable. Once I thought it was only a big park and will not cost much time traveling around it, however I was completely wrong. Walking around the Jade Flowery Islet, it was already cost me 2 hours. Together with Jingshan, very near to the Forbidden City, Beihai Park is one of the imperial gardens during Qing Dynasty.

Outside the park, the White Pagoda is eye appeal so my first destination is it. On the way to the White Pagoda, I arrived at Temple of Eternal Peace. The temples in Beihai Park have all become the tourist attractions, so there is no incense. On the first and fifth day of a month, the incense given by the tourists unified burned. From the Temple of Eternal Peace, the branches are hanging the visible brand for blessing. The Bell Tower in the temple costs extra three yuan, ring the bell three symbolizing peace auspicious.

Forbidden City View from Beihai Park

Boarded the White Tower is not easy. Tourists had to climb the 70 wooden steps. Additional three Yuan get to the top of the tower overlooking the scenery of the central zone of Beijing. Where vision is extremely open, panoramic views of the Forbidden City, the highest point of Jingshan Park, Tiananmen Square and the National Grand Theater, how spectacular!

Stepped down from the White Tower, around Jade Flowery Islet, I met the Yuexin Palace, Yuegu Tower, Long Gallery, Qiongdao Chunyin and other attractions. The worth mentioning attraction is the Fangshan Restaurant, which is a famous restaurant franchise court of authentic flavor. Since 1911 the Qing Dynasty was overthrown, the former Qing imperial kitchen cooks lost their jobs. In 1925, a former practitioners in the Qing imperial kitchen Zhaos Renzhai, inviting Sun Shaoran and other "imperial kitchen" workers opened a restaurant, modeled on the practices of the Qing "Imperial", making a variety of dishes, and take the name of "Fangshan". 1959, the "Fangshan" moved to the present site by the North Shore of Beihai, not only to expand the business area, but also add variety dishes. Fangshan produced exquisite dishes, paid attention to the appearance of color shape and the taste, inherited the Qing "Imperial" clean, fresh, crisp, and tender. If you want to experience the authentic Palace Food, here will be the best place.

Long Gallery, although not famous as the one in Summer Palace, it is very beautiful. A large number of tourists came here to have a short rest enjoying the scenery on the lake. I took the sightseeing cruise to the other side of the park. Overlooking, the gallery around the White Pagoda, surrounds the Jade Flowery Islet, so beautiful!

Travel Tips on Badaling Great Wall

However wonderful you expect the Great Wall of China to be, nothing prepares you for its majesty and the stunning scenery when you first step foot on this Wonder of the World. There is no visiting Beijing without seeing the Great Wall of China. Woke up early in the morning, after an hour driving, we got to our first destination of Beijing tour – Badaling Great Wall. Very exciting! For a distant view, it looks like a dragon snakes along the hills, so magnificent!

Badaling Great Wall

At 10:30, we formally started our trip on Badaling Great Wall. It was bright sunny day but breath-taking hot. 30 degree is too high for climbing the great wall. How I wish the weather could be full of clouds. The majority of the tourists here are Chinese. I couldn't imagine how crowed here will be on weekends. Not all the paths to the watchtowers are steps, some took a 75-degree climb that I had to crawl, tightly grasp the baluster by the side of the wall. The worst part was that these climbs weren't short or few. Go ups and downs, my legs feel very tired, they started trembling without control. Just one hour hiking, I had to have a rest on the stairs with deep breathing.

Great Wall Carved with Names

The Great Wall is well protected however a fly in the ointment is that on the bricks there are fully carved with names by the tourists! A bit touristy attraction but we enjoyed our adventure through by without any disturbance. Also we took a lot of pictures to record our great trip and feelings on the Great Wall (the background of close shot is unique – full of people). One amazing thing is that for Chinese tourists, wherever full of people, they went there to take photos. Even more than 30 people line up for taking pictures at "Brave Man Stone". Trek for hours, standing on the top of the watchtowers and looking around, you will feel very proud, amazing at the magnificent scenery. This is truly one of man's greatest engineering feats when you consider the equipments they would have had to use. Great Experience!

Travel tips: Despite being high up on the top of a mountain ridge, the air is thinner and the sun strong and you will benefit by taking a hat and sunscreen. Comfortable shoes or trainers will be necessary. Take plenty of water with you. Bottles which will cost you 2 to 3RMB in Beijing are sold triple prices on the wall! And the most important one is that on rainy days, never been to the Great Wall, more dangerous.

Let's Enjoy the Beautiful Scenery of Badaling Great Wall

A highlight of our trip was visiting the Great Wall in Beijing - a section called Badaling. It is not far from Beijing downtown and only 1 hour driving. It is truly a major landmark of China. On the bus for afar view, it gives us some great views of the wall as it snakes its way through the hills - majesty and stunning.

Grand View of Badaling Great Wall

For the Great Wall tour, you have three ways to go up: first, use the cable car (round trip or one way) to get to the north 7 towers and then climbing; second, take the sliding car (round trip or one way) to get to the 4th tower and then hiking; third, just hiking from the 1st watchtower and then came back in the same way! We choose the last way – just climbing! Once on the great wall, there are two directions for tourists to choose. One part (the north part) is flatter and is more open to hike but is packed with tourists. The other part (the south part) is steeper, but with a fraction of the tourists, and from the high point, you can see the wall stretching for miles and miles!

We chose the north part with more watchtowers and tourists. Not all the roads lead to watchtowers are steps. Some parts were so steep you had to leak forward to keep from falling down the incline (much more difficult for climbing down). There is no "easy" portion of the wall.  It is either going up or going down. The view makes up for it.

About 2 hours hiking, we finally reached the top - 12 towers, however full of tourists that we could only take photos with people as the background. Went downstairs, I found it much harder than climbing up. My little legs are trembling out of control! Oh no, just stop for a short rest, my legs went on strike. Standing by the wall, deep breath the cool and fresh air, afar view of the green mountains and sinuous great wall, perfect feeling!

What an amazing feat it was for this wall to be built. I really enjoyed the experience and would do it again in a heartbeat. Despite the increased amount of tourists especially tour groups, it was still beautiful. You may see it in the history books or in documentaries many times, but the sheer size is awe inspiring up close and personal. It is a must see place in Beijing, China!

Summer Vacation on Mutianyu Great Wall

Without visiting the Great Wall is as if you were not visit China. Tours usually get to go to the Badaling section of the Great Wall and they even take you to the Ming Tombs on the way so kind of understand the package deal people take. However we prefer to the private tour to Mutianyu Great Wall far away from the downtown with less tourists. Yes, we made a right choice. Here we did not see any groups of tourists organized by the travel agencies. Though nearly 3 hours driving, it worthwhile!

Cable Car on Mutianyu

We took the cable car to the Great Wall and started out at around watchtower 14 and our goal was to get to the tower 1, as these Watchtowers are high up the mountain that will give us the best view.  We walked and walked and walked, amazed by the scenery. We made tons of jokes, and took some fun pictures as well. Tons and tons and tons of steep steps to climb… what a challenge! Breathing extremely hard, in and out, I almost didn't make it to the terminal. Getting up from Tower 2 to 1 in 1 shot with no break was a huge accomplishment in my eyes, as I really had to push myself. By the time we got to Tower 2, I was really struggling and completely cursing my skinny little legs! We had to stop every 10 steps to catch our breath, but we eventually made it up. We had to physically crawl up the final 10 steps which were huge and almost vertical. It was comforting seeing the other people around us struggling as much! Standing on the top of Tower 1, we took in the amazing 360 degree view, caught our breath and patted ourselves on the backs for making it. This had been a dream of mine for several years...and I had made it come true now. So inspired to live my best life I cannot really convey the excellent feelings accurately in words. Only my heart knew, glowed warmly within me. I tried to be in the moment as much as I could...just living now and savoring the excellent experience.

Grand View on Mutianyu

You can imagine smiles at our faces as we walked the 3 km up and down the wall, admiring views on the way and generally enjoying this masterpiece of defense architecture. We aimed to stay till the sun set to get the real feel of it.

Summer View on Mutianyu Great Wall

No trip to Beijing is complete without visiting the iconic – the Great Wall. Instead of the nearer but crowed Badaling Great Wall, we choose another famous section, Mutianyu. The bus ride to the Great Wall of Mutianyu was almost 3 hours long, but most definitely worth it. The base of the wall was of course exclusively touristy. And of course the wonderful experience did leave me an unforgettable memory.

Mutianyu Great Wall

This section of the Great Wall was opened to the public stretches for approximately 4 km with towers positioned at frequent intervals as the Wall dipped and dived along the contours and hugged the ridgeline. The trek up to the Great Wall was along stairs up the side of a hill. It was a bit tiring but more or less the same as walking along the wall anyways. The wall itself was a few meters wide with fairly low parapets and small holes dug out at the bottom partly to let rain water out and partly as a place to jab a spear in ancient time for protecting. The pathway was fully tiled with square stones carefully laid down. Stairs were common. You could see the wall snaking along the top of the mountain ridge going for quite a distant view. With the temperature hitting around the high 28's, I and everyone else was slogging up the wall, sweating along the way. With each successive watchtower on the way up, there was a better view of the valley below. Beautiful, magnificent, great!

Almost on every watchtower there was a vendor selling chocolate, cool drinks, beers and small souvenirs, they are all very enthusiastic with fluent English, however the prices are two or three times expensive than at the foot of the Great Wall. That’s worth it. Everyday carry these goods climbing the Great Wall is really a great job!

Totally there are 23 watchtowers on Mutianyu Great Wall. Since only has three hours hiking on the Great Wall, we could only visit parts of it and we walked through 1 to 14 of them, the part with more tourists. Here we didn’t see large group of tourists organized by the travel agencies, and the majority of the hikers were the foreign tourists.

After 2 hours hiking up and downs, my legs were shaking. The better way to went down is to take the cable car or the slide rail. Obviously the slide rail is much more popular. And I enjoyed the fast speed experience.

Temple of Heaven - A must see in Beijing

I am very interested in the traditional culture of China. Temple of Heaven is the symbol of Beijing but with limit time, I only traveled to the main attractions of it. Although less than half day, the tour did impressive to me.

Temple of Heaven

Circular Mound Altar, Imperial Vault of Heaven and the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest are three main buildings on the central axis of the Temple of Heaven. These three main buildings are connected by a long north-south platform road, called the Danbi Bridge, which is the road for the emperor and the courtiers walk during the ceremony of prayer. It a wide road with the north higher than the south, symbolizing this road is the step to heaven. About this road it is very particular. We must believe the middle of the widest Road is for the emperor to go, in fact, the middle is the Sacred Road, the left is Okimichi and the right is for the ministers. The emperor went through the Okimichi, and the officials and ministers through the Benevolent. Under the bridge there is something to the tunnel, where is the sacrificial cattle sent to slaughter.

Circular Mound Altar

The Circular Mound Altar is the place for emperor to worship the heaven founded in 9th year of Jiajing reign (1530). The altar plane was circular, divided into three levels, located to white marble fence. The railings head on each engraved with cloud dragon and dragons head protruding from a stone in each railing for the drainage. The Circular Mound Altar has inner and outer double circle low walls, symbolizing the hemispherical dome. On the center of it there is a boulder and standing on it speaking, the sound extremely louder. This is because the altar surface is smooth, the sound waves to quickly spread in all directions, met around the stone fence, reflected back confluence, the sound doubling. Travelers scrambling to stand on the heart of stone on the center dome, posed for pictures.

Imperial Vault of Heaven

Imperial Vault of Heaven located in the north of the Circular Mound Altar is dedicated to the place of the sacrificial tablets of the emperors, founded in the 9th year of Jiajing region (1530). The main hall and the veranda around a smooth circular wall, people speak at different locations of the wall, standing on the other side you can hear it very clearly, so this is called the Whispering Gallery. Under the steps of Imperial Vault of Heaven there have three stones called echo stone. Standing on the first stone of the stairs, clapping, you will hear a loud echo; standing on the second stone clapping, you will hear two echoes and standing on the third one, you can hear three acoustic echoes. Don't believe it? Just try!

Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest

The most famous hall in the Temple of Heaven will be the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest. Very ambitious and it has been hailed as a symbol building of Beijing. With a distant view, it looks beautiful with blue roof, while having a close look at, it is so huge and magnificent. The hall is supported by 28 large supporting pillars. The middle four Longjing columns support the upper roof; the middle of 12 golden columns support the second eaves; the other 12 support the external layer of the roof. The white marble in the center of the hall carved with dragon and phoenix, symbolizing good luck. However not allowed to enter the hall, all the visitors cannot have a closer look at the luxurious decoration of the internal, only to take some pictures outside.
