Strategies Used to Defend Great Wall

The Great Wall has been used as a defense for the capital and inner land for quite a long time. But to send soldiers and build the wall higher are not the only way to defend the Great Wall. There are some other strategies which were used to defend the Great Wall from being invaded by the Mongolian tribes.

Great Wall

In the beginning of Han Dynasty, the state was in no condition to build the Great Wall to defend the inner land from Mongolian invaders as the construction of the Great Wall costs a sizeable amount of money and labor. Therefore, the Han emperors decided to send some women to the Mongolian leaders to prevent the Mongolian invaders attacking the Great Wall. In this way, the Great Wall was void of being engaged in blood and war. This way of dealing with the invaders had been used till the Han dynasty was ready to attack back the Mongolian tribes. In later times, the dynasties also used this strategy to defend the wall. During Han and Sui dynasties, peace marriages were used to keep the Mongolian tribes attacking the Great Wall. Back then, the women played a key role in softening the ambition of the Mongolian tribes.

Moreover, the trade and granting titles to the Mongolian leaders were other way of keeping the Mongolian tribes attacking the Great Wall. The reason why the Mongolian tribes tried to attack the Great Wall lies in the lack of sources and respect from the Han people. If the Mongolian tribes could get what they want without war or blood, they would be more than happy to accept those offers. The most famous records are about the Ming dynasty. Back then, the Mongolian leader Anda Khan was granted imperial titles by the Ming emperor and decided not to attack the Great Wall. And the peace between the two leaders lasted for a long time. To make the peace last longer, the Ming emperor also gave orders to set up a few passes for trade between the Mongolian people and Han people. Afterwards, the Khan died, but his wife continued his legacy and kept peace with the Han emperors. Ever since then, Han dynasty and Mongolian tribes maintained a peaceful relation with each other.

To sum it up, there are plenty of other strategies used to defend the Great Wall in a peaceful way.

When and Why the Construction of Great Wall Ceased

Theoretically speaking, the construction of the Great Wall ceased right after the Qing Dynasty consolidated its rule across China, though there were some small sections built to stop the famished farmers going across the borders as well as the small-scale restorations of the Great Wall.

Great Wall
The first reason why Qing Dynasty stopped to build the Great Wall is because it concerns the jurisdiction. The rulers of the Qing Dynasty were Manchu people outside the Great Wall and they even established their own country there. Long before the Qing Dynasty secured its rule all over China, the Manchu people had conquered all of the minority groups living on the northern grassland of the Great Wall. As the first and foremost purpose for constructing the Great Wall was eliminated, the construction of the Great Wall was no longer in need.

The second reason is related to the relationships between different nationalities. Right before the Qing Dynasty consolidated its rule across China, the Mongolian had been allies with the Manchu People. The first ruler of Qing Dynasty promoted the pacific policy toward the Mongolian people, so throughout the rule of Qing Dynasty, lots of Mongolian daughters were married to the Qing Emperors. By and by, the cross-marriage harmonized the relationships between the Manchu and Mongolian people. Moreover, the Qing Dynasty rulers granted plenty of royal titles to the Mongolian people, which facilitated their relationship more. The Mongolian people have ever since been the loyal servants of Qing rulers.

The last but not the least reason why the construction of the Great Wall was dropped has something to do with the awareness of the Qing Dynasty rulers. The most reliable evidence lies in the words left by one of the most famous Qing Dynasty Kangxi Emperor, who once wrote a poem to insinuate that the Great Wall was expended to the seaside, with millions of workmen involved in this massive project, but it did not stop the Manchu people conquering and ruling the whole China. Therefore we can draw a conclusion through the awareness of Qing Dynasty rulers that the continual construction of the Great Wall is to no avail as the rule of China does not depend on it.

To sum it up, the construction of the Great Wall ceased not without some certain historical reasons.

Mistakes I Made Eating Peking Roast Duck

First time to Beijing, under the leading of the tour guide, we came to the Quanjude Restaurant to taste of the Peking Roast Duck. Once enjoyed the honored Roast Duck, I corrected the mistakes I ever held.

Peking Roast Duck

Just Regard Peking Roast Duck as New Dish
For the fresh appearance and delicious flavor, Peking Roast Duck appears to me as a new-produced dish. I have never studied it not alone its background and culture. While eating, I just got it has the same high with Great Wall. It has profound history and deep traditional cultural connotation. It is said that earlier in the Yuan Dynasty, the dish only served in royal families. Up until the Southern Song Dynasty, ducks were roasted in the area around Jinling. However, the later Yuan Dynasty rulers moved their capital city to Beijing from Nanjing and took with them their cuisine thus making roast duck popular in the city that was finally to make it its very own specialty.

Confuse the Cooking Procedure
For the delicious Peking Roast Duck, one piece by one piece, I thought they were cooked very simple from the appearance. However, to my surprise, it spends much time cooking and there are many procedures. Over a long period of improvement, the cooking procedure has been firmly established. First, a suitable white Beijing duck should be prepared. After this duck was plucked, air is pumped between its skin and flesh. A small incision is made for the removal of the entrails. Second, one the duck was totally cleaned, a wooden skewer is inserted through it to facilitate its hanging and ultimate heating. After that, the skin of the duck is air dried and brushed with a layer of sugar. At last, this duck was put into a big oven, using a smokeless hardwood fuel and heating to about 270 degrees Centigrade for 40 minutes. After that, the delicious roast duck is ready.

Mistake in the Eating
In the eating procedure, there are also certain ideas. When eating the duck, the chef will put over 100 thin flakes on the table and each has its piece of crispy skin. First, taking one of the small, thin pancakes provided and spread it with plum sauce, small slices of spring onions and then adds some pieces of duck. Then, roll the pancake up and take a bite.

Peking Roast Duck is just like a scenic spot needing your careful tastes!

During the Opera show, if you pay particular attention, you may easily find that there are about four artistic techniques applied in Peking Opera, including singing, dialogue, acting and acrobatic combat. Singing is pretty much self-evident while the dialogue is usually mixed with music. Singing and dialogue combine to make up the song, one of the basic elements concerning Opera show. Acting is kind of like dancing moves and acrobatic combat is a combination of martial arts and acrobatics. Similarly, acting and acrobatic combat make up the dance, another element of Opera show. As for the performers, they all started to learn this art from a very young age. On stage, maybe they only perform for a few minutes but off stage they have practiced for like a thousand times. During their trainings, they will learn all of the techniques and skills concerning the Opera show. Till later times, some of them may be particularly good at singing, some at acting and some at acrobatic combat.

Feature of the Peking Opera
Moreover, I bet the first impression the Opera show leaves you is no other than those amazing facial masks. They are nothing like the common masks that you are pretty familiar with. They are actually painted on the faces by the performers. It is a little bit more like a kind of make-up. During the Opera show, you will see a wide variety of facial masks painted with different colors. Every color reveals the personality, role and fate of the character, like red symbolizing bravery, silver and gold representing myth or supernatural powers and so on. Historic Value of Qin, Zhao and Yan Great Wall

The Warring States Qin, Zhao, Yan Great Wall is of great historical value. First of all, it shows that, only the construction of the Great Wall plus a certain number of troops could prevent the northern nomadic cavalry carrying out lightning raid. Without the Great Wall, even if there are a large number of infantry and cavalry, it is still not defense. The Warring States period plenty of historical facts have proved this point. Because the Great Wall is effective military defense project, and later adopted by Qin Shihuang. Qin Shihuang after the expulsion of the Huns in Mobei, ordered Meng Tian immediately to build the new Great Wall.

Great Wall of China

Secondly, the Great Wall during the Warring States of Qin, Zhao, Yan is based on the situation with the wall built upon the mountains, valley and plain areas. Building high thick walls is to defend Hun and Donghu cavalry. Beyond the Great Wall, both inside and outside the commanding sections they also built Beacon Tower, for scouting and delivering a message, letting the Great Wall garrison ready. At the traffic intersection of the wall built barrier city, garrison, to strengthen the defensive ability of the Great Wall. Within the Great Wall, at a distance, the city had built the garrison and a message prompt communication network, so that the wall is unified to support each other. The Great Wall and Beacon Tower, City Passes and other ancillary buildings constitute a complete military defense system.

This set of military defense system is scientific and effective. It is very important for later military defensive project. Meng Tian had built the Great Wall of Qin Dynasty, although all new, but obviously, he designed it based on the wall built during the Warring States Qin, Zhao, Yan. For example, he used the mountain terrain, because of the dangers to build city barrier. He built the Great Wall upon the mountains, ridges, peaks and ridges for the city so that Xiongnu cavalry, unable to cross the river. Sometimes the Great Wall was built in the river, as the enemy is not good with water. Qin Great Wall Beacon Tower has improved, built in the open mountain, but according to the terrain, every 10 meters built a tower. The city also has improved barrier for traffic by the mouth of valley.

Overall, the Great Wall of Qin, Zhao and Yan played a key role in Chinese architectural history.

Tips for Better Navigating Beijing

Navigating the sprawling metropolitan city of Beijing is no easy task at all. It takes some patience and experience, but more importantly, fool-proof plans. Here are some practical tips for you to better navigate the city.

Beijing Airport Shuttle Bus

Tip 1 - Forget about Taking the Super Shuttle
After landing at the airport, it is best not to wait on the curb for a ride in a sweat-soaked coach at the risk of being dropped off at the wrong place, all just for saving a few bucks? It is really not worth it from my personal experience. Your time is worth more than that and should be saved on your trips rather than on the ride. The shuttle is the worst $20 you will ever save and takes forever to drop you to your hotel. It usually takes way much longer to get in town than a Town Car or cab would have been. By the way, you are just first in town and do not know well around the city, so you just would not want to be dropped at the wrong place, just to save a few more bucks. Moreover, when you plan on booking a hotel, pay more attention to the near city center which is open to vast interpretation. Some hotels claiming near city center usually mean you have to spend 30-minute commutes and outrageous taxi fares to get there. So it is better to book a hotel which is located downtown - it is easier to get to and launch your trips from.

Tip 2 - Get Your Money Changed at the Airport
For those travelers while traveling overseas, it seems universally acknowledged that only amateur travelers change money at the airport. Though the exchange rate for foreign currency is better in town, it is not worth it at all. It usually saves you not that much money. According to the recent dollar-to-pound exchange rate in Beijing, it will not save much more money than you expect. Therefore, it is not worth your time to get in town to change some money. By the way, it will take you a long while to navigate the city to find an acceptable place to change money and you may spend an hour lining up for your turn. And if you are unlucky, you may end up with some local coins in your pocket. Convenience factor alone makes it worth changing some cash at the airport, let alone the time saved on your trip.

Overall, with these tips in mind, you will enjoy a pleasant trip to Beijing!

How to Travel like a Local in Beijing

Beijing is China at its colorful, lively best. The list of fun stuff to explore in Beijing seems endless. But for those who want to explore the vibrant city like a local, there are some things you need to bear in mind before making your trip plan to Beijing.

You may give them a feeling that they are the host and you are the guest, therefore, they would go out of their way to make sure that you have a good time while visiting Beijing. There are plenty of locations or shopping spaces in Beijing where you may easily pick some local outfits to try on and be more local-like. If you still have no clue as to which one to pick, than Tang Suit is a good bet as it is hailed as the signature dress of China. Moreover, it is highly recommended to head for those time-honored shops in Beijing, selling iconic Beijing curios. By the way, dressing like a local is a best way to memorize your travel to China, with everything looking like Chinese-style.

Second of all - hang out at favorite venues of locals
If you ask a local how he or she spends spare time while living in Beijing, the answer may shock you. Nowadays, the locals living in Beijing like to hang out to their favorite haunts, like the teahouses, opera theaters, massage centers, night clubs and pubs as well as shopping malls –the list could really go on forever! For an in-depth taste of the lives of the locals, it is best to hit some lanes and alleyways in the city, but be careful as you may easily get lost while finding your way out. With a leisurely wander down some lovely lanes in the city, you will get a closer look at the laid-back lifestyle led by the locals. Some playing chess, some drinking tea by the steps of the courtyard, some just wandering around like you - all will give you a sense of the life of today led by the locals. It will be fun and an essential Chinese experience too.

Iconic Structure of the Great Wall - Duokou

Hailed as one of the most magnificent engineering feats in the world, the Great Wall features a wide variety of sophisticated structures. One of the most recognizable is the crenels spreading all over the wall. The crenel refers to the opening on the wall, built outside the wall for defense and attack. The crenel features a saw-shape and short. Those who do not know about the crenels on the wall call them Chnegchi, just because they look like some well arranged teeth on the wall.

Duokou on Great Wall

The crenel is about 80cm in height and 200cm in width. Underneath the crenel there is usually a watching hole or Leishi hole or shooting hole. The top of the crenel is designed with a triangle shape to prevent rain erosion. The crenels play an important role in the defensive system of the Great Wall. As a part of the Great Wall, they are used for both defense and attack. When the enemies attack the wall, the defensive soldiers can shoot arrows to defense themselves beside the crenels from a high point. In terms of defense, the soldiers can hide behind the crenels in case they are exposed to the arrows from the enemies.

The crenels are referred to in the documents left by QiJiguang - a very famous supervisor of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall - who mentioned all sections of the wall should be equipped with crenels.

Crenels at Jizhen section are kind of different from the other sections of the wall. They are built with sharp bricks shaped as triangle. The triangle-shaped bricks are used to build the Great Wall to ensure no matter what angle the soldiers look out, the angle is about 45 degrees. This design highly widens the viewing and attacking range. Moreover, the enemies look from below, the angle is still the same. In this way, the defense of the Great Wall is greatly enhanced to ensure the defense soldiers are at lower risk of being shot by the arrows. The crenels can be traced back to early Qing dynasty, back then, it was named as Zhidie, meaning the teeth-shaped short wall. Different from the Ming Dynasty wall, the crenels were referred as the wall itself in ancient times of China.

To sum it up, the crenels are an integrated part of the Great Wall.

What is Horse-face of the Great Wall

The Horse-face is a kind structure built as part of the city wall. The Horse-face cannot be found on the early Ming Dynasty city wall of Nanjing and the capital city wall of Fengyang. However, according to the Nanjing city wall construction inspection, the plane was irregular in shape, the wall between the both sides played the role of the horse-face, so there was no need to build a horse-face there. This shows that the ancients is not in the design of building walls just to follow the beaten track, traditional custom, but suit one's measures to local conditions to build a variety of city wall facilities. Ming Emperor Zhu Di moved the capital to Beijing and started to build "horse-face" on the city wall. During 32th year of Jiajing reign (1553 AD) when the south city was built, there were 172 horse-faces built on the wall. There were two sizes, with distance of 60~100 meters, according to estimation it is built to fit different range weapons. The city is more important in the strategic defense of the Ming Dynasty. During Zhu Shuang reign, Xian City had 98 horse-faces, 20 meters wide, 12 meters long, rectangular shape. Outside of the wall is provided with a horse-face wall, the left and right sides of the wall opened a crenel, it is easy to throw stone, shoot the arrow, to stop the enemy attack.

Great Wall

The horse-face structure is not positive wall crenellation, about two higher than the wall foot, can prevent the city under the vector bomb wounding. The distance between the horse-faces is 120 meters, perfect for shooting the ancient arrow, crossbows, throwing stones, such as throwing weapons with effective range, thus outside the main wall, the high dense crossfire network was formed to improve the defense function. Coastal city such as Jiangsu, Nantong City, there are also horse-face structures built. In order to enhance the ability of defense, on the horse-face generally the watchtowers are built, which can be used for soldiers for outlook, and store weapons - the defensive performance enhanced to the highest point. Xian city wall features double eaves and two watchtowers, showing the military defense. During wartime it can be used as defense to observe the enemy's situation, to prevent the enemy attacking from below.

Overall, the horse-face structure is an important part of the defense system of the Great Wall.

How the Great Wall Was Guarded

The Great Wall of China used to be guarded in different ways. In general, there are both some similarities and differences when it comes to the defense of the Great Wall. One of the most representative sections of the Great Wall was constructed during Ming Dynasty. The defensive administration of Ming Dynasty Great Wall was operated directly by the government, but there were some changes over time. At the beginning of Ming Dynasty, the defense of the Great Wall was always accompanied with the military operations as the whole country was still in chaos. At the time, the defense of the Great Wall was in charge of the generals. For example, during Hongwu reign of Ming Dynasty, generals Xuda and Fengsheng were responsible for the defense of the Great Wall and engaging battles at the same time. On one hand, they were responsible for restoring and administrating the Great Wall to build a complete defensive system.

Great Wall Guarded

Afterwards, as Ming Dynasty had officially consolidated its rule over the whole country, the administration and defense of the Great Wall changed. The then military administrative system was called Dusi Weisuozhi. Dusi was the local administration center, the Wei and Suo were its subjective institutions. In Ming Dynasty, there were 16 dusi, 5 xingdusi. There were dozens of dusi set up along the Great Wall, which were responsible for the defense and administration of the Great Wall. The Ming Dynasty Great Wall starts from Yalu River from the east and ends at Jiayuguan, with a large number of guarding passes scattered along the Great Wall. Back then the defensive system had become very complete and advanced. And the defensive system was controlled by the central government and the emperors.

The administration system of the military in Ming Dynasty includes: Wujun Dudufu – headquartered in the capital, with the leader called Dudu; Bingbu - leader called Shangshu; Dusi and Xingdusi headquartered in the provinces, leader called Duzhihushi; Weishihuisi, leader called Zhihuishi; Qianhu Zhihuisi, leader called Qianhu; Baihusuo, leader called Baihu; Zongqi, leader called Zongqi; Xiaoqi, leader called Xiaoqi. The administration and defense system of the Great Wall in Ming Dynasty is the most advanced compared with the former times.

Do not Make such Dumb Mistakes like I Did in Beijing

It is no fun at all if you make some mistakes while traveling in Beijing! They can totally ruin your mood and the whole travel. So if you want to enjoy a pleasant and fun trip to Beijing, you really should not make such mistakes like I did while enjoying sightseeing in the city!

First of all – Forgot to Watch Weather Report before Headed Out
Weather Report

Originally I planned to visit the Great Wall at Mutianyu section, but without checking out the weather that day, I run into a rain on the wall. It was kind of dangerous and slippery for me to go on hiking on the wall with the rain coming down, though it was not heavy, but it was enough to ruin the trekking on the wall as the stone path was extremely slippery and steep too at some sections. Unfortunately I had to hide under a watch tower for hours before the rain stopped in the end. Everything was ruined! I had no fun at all that day! You have no idea how I regretted not to read the weather report before I go it alone to the Great Wall.

Secondly – Lack of Bargaining Skills Cost Lots of Money
Bargain while Shopping

No trip to Beijing would be complete without a shopping experience in the city. Beijing is kind of like a treasure trove, with amazing stuff all over the city, ranging from crafts, artworks to the antiques and so on. I only had a few days in Beijing, so I decided to do some shopping on day, but unexpectedly, not familiar with the bargaining skills of China, I paid a lot more for everything I bought along the way. It was not the money that I cared about more, but the pride! So if you ever want to enjoy some shopping experience in Beijing, you better practice your bargaining skills first. You will find bargaining with the vendors and sellers is kind o f fun in the end!

In addition, here I got some good news for those who have never been to Beijing before – if you only have a short time, say three days, to visit Beijing, then you do not have to worry about the visa problems because, it is visa-free now to travel in Beijing within three days. Avoid making the same mistakes as I did, you will enjoy a pleasant journey to Beijing and have lots of fun!

Snowing Scenery in Tiananmen Square

According to the weather report, Wednesday is an ordinary day. Got up in early morning, I found it was snowing but it would not stop the journey to the museums in Beijing with my colleague - Shintia, and on the contrary, the snowy day made for the museum tour to know the other sides of Beijing.

When we arrived at Tiananmen Square by Subway Line 1, it snowed heavier and all square was covered by the white dress. Because of the snow, the transportation is not very well, and the traffic wardens still standing in the heavy snow and directed the traffic carefully. Standing before the National Museum of China, we enjoyed the Tiananmen Gate Tower from distance. It stands with the flowing pieces of snow, through the fuzzy distance, it seemed like the man was receiving the baptism in the white world and enjoy its baptism resolutely. The red flags still fly in air and showing their beauties to snow which is dance by their small bodies. Even in such day, the symbolized buildings all stand straight and witness the past time.

Tiananmen Square in White Snow

I considered that maybe rare people would visit this square in such snowy day, but the fact moved me deeply. Many travelers stay there took pictures to records the beautiful time in Tiananmen Square, they use their enthusiasm melted the cold temperature and snow. Casually, a person, jumped into my scene with an epoptic dress, who was cleaning the snow on the ground in order to protect the safety of tourists. All others were enjoying this exciting weather and play happily in this square, just the men who were clearing snow kept their posture and worked carefully. Every day, we need people like them to make the society more peace and harmony no matter rainy or snowy.

Discordantly, people in square always advise travelers to take pictures and add commercial aims into such harmony scene. Maybe someone needs their service, but what they do disturbed this peace picture. It is just the thought before we entering the theme. But it is really the expression of my emotion.

Qianmen Street and Dashilan Shopping Tour

Located at back of Tiananmen Square, Qianmen Street was busy street originally and close to Zhengyangmen. In Ming and Qing Dynasty, it was called as Zhengyangmen Street and renamed as Qianmen Street formally in 1965. Owing to the developed business in middle of Ming Dynasty, the both sides of Qianmen Street appear many markets and rows, so Qianmen Street shapes to be a business street gradually, including the famous Dashilan.

Qianmen Street

Sits on axle wire, Qianmen Street was rebuilt in 2008, before Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, in order to leave a better impression for foreigners. The rebuilt Qianmen Street still keeps the antique buildings, no matter traditional shops or modern western brands all sit in these Chinese typical constructions. The big Pailou tells you are entering the Qianmen Street, the most famous business street. As a Chinese, I like this kind of buildings very much, and they attract me by their delicate details, cultured shapes and bright colors. The most interesting in Qianmen Street is the free tramcar, tourists can take it to enjoy the sightseeing of Qianmen Street. This kind of car was the transportation in old Beijing and Shanghai, is a mark of time. Walking in the main street, we found several hutongs in both sides which are also flourishing. Most stores in Qianmen Street are China time-honored brands, such as Quanjude, Tanmujiang, etc. Now, Xianyukou Hutong is Food Street, attracts tourists with their delicious smells and strange names.

Beijing Dashilan

After short distance and turn left, we found the Dashilan, the most famous business street in Qianmen area. Dashilan is an important part of axle wire from south to north with 500 years history, includes 36 shops in 11 industries. Dashilan keeps many original constructions, and the constructions and things happened between them are all the human treasure and culture resources. Today, I really appreciate the most values of Beijing. Also, we found the Tianjin specialty – Goubuli, which is the most steamed stuffed bun. Wandering in this small street, I seemed back to its old time and appreciate its flourishing scenery in that time. At the end of Dashilan, I found there are many shops of Ruifuxiang spread in Qianmen area. It is said the material of first national flag was offered by Ruifuxiang. If you tailor clothing in Ruifuxiang, it must be beautiful and valuable. Especially the cheongsam, it is very elegant and beautiful.

In one word, Qianmen area is the most famous and flourishing area with typical Chinese features.

Visiting on the Great Wall at Mutianyu, I found various warning signs remind you should care safety of you and your family in Chinese and English. For example, beware of slippery during rainy and snowy days. And some introductions also show in Chinese and English, pay attention to tourists from all over the world. At same time, I saw about there are many dustbins stand in every other distance, which cares the tourists fully. In addition, some places are not allowed to climb and they show in warning signs. In-depth Explore Mutianyu Great Wall

The Great Wall at Mutianyu is a masterpiece of restoration, with 22 original style watchtowers. Mutianyu, meaning of admire fields valley, is the longest fully-restored Great Wall section open to tourists. Before this tour, we had made plan and decided to visit from No. 10 Watchtower to No. 20 Watchtower. It is said that this part in Mutianyu Great Wall is most beautiful and characteristic. So I show some interesting places and spots to you.

Mutianyu Great Wall

Before arrived at No. 10 Watchtower, we saw an interesting trunk at foot of Great Wall which is inlayed many Chinese hard currencies orderly. Some students try to buckle sown some of them but failed. When I was doubt that how they were inlayed in it and why they were so strong, I found the trunk is made by cement and these hard currencies were inlayed it when it was built. So funny that many foreigners stop to study it! In addition, we met many foreign tourists here, and they choose the Great Wall at Mutianyu instead of Badaling because of less crowded and beautiful scenery.

Inner Structure of Watchtower

Standing on No. 10 Watchtower, we saw some other watchtowers in different shapes, but inner structures are all built according to a Chinese word – 回. May be they have their functions in wars I thought. During this tour, I have strong interest to the No. 13, No. 15 and No. 20 Watchtowers. First, No. 13 Watchtower, it is built with a small house on the top of watchtower compared with other watchtowers. I don't know what it is used for, but it is special among so many watchtowers. No. 15 Watchtower is most famous in Chinese, just because it is photography place of "If You Are the One 2" which is a famous Chinese film. Many people climb on it and took photos, especially young, and they all want to have ideal marriage as well as this film. Refer to the No. 20 Watchtower, the last port of our tour, I mightily suggest you climb it. It is the best place to enjoy beautiful scenery of Mutianyu Great Wall and what you see from No. 20 Watchtower are the most beautiful and majestic. And it is the most challenge part from 10th to 20th Watchtower.

Cable Car of Mutianyu

Took cable car down to foot of Mutianyu, we enter the China Stone Museum last. If you have tickets of Mutianyu Great Wall, you can enter it for free. It is really a museum for stones, gathering various strange and grotesque stones. For the time being, we just took pictures generally and had no deep visit in it. If I have chance next time, I must visit it carefully.

It is the most interesting things and places in my mind. If you want to enjoy more, you should climb it personally and enjoy its grand views.

Mutianyu Great Wall Autumn Tour

Great Wall is always the most attractive spot in China. In fact, it was my first time to visit the Great Wall. Before this visit, we have made many works about Mutianyu Great Wall. It is said that Mutianyu Great Wall is the most beautiful section of the Great Wall, the essence of the Great Wall and most important is less crowded.

Map of Mutianyu Great Wall

Took bus 867, we arrived at Mutianyu Great Wall at about 11:00. Studying the map, we decided to climb from No. 10 to No. 20 Watch Tower, because it is said that NO.20 Watch Tower is the best place to enjoy scenery of Mutianyu Great Wall. Before getting the real Great Wall, we climbed steep stairs to foot of No. 10 Watch Tower. In my opinion, this part is more tired than the Great Wall. After almost half an hour, we saw the real Great Wall. First sight, I was regret that I have never visited it. It is really majestic and magnificent, even breathtaking. It stands so high that we should climb stairs firstly. But in building time, how they carry every heavy foundation stone to the mountain even top of the mountain I asked myself.

Watch Tower

With a deep breath, we started our Mutianyu Great Wall tour. As the guide said Great Wall at Mutianyu is always the first choice of foreign tourists, who we have met most are foreigners, young and aged. The No. 10 Watch Tower is lower, so we look up it we saw various watch towers in different shapes. I almost can image that soldiers were defending the invaders and protecting our home. I must say it is really a stable project to resist foreign regressions. On the way, we walked up and down depend on the terrain of mountains. How great ancient Chinese! Stopped at higher place, we overlook the views of mountains. It is still beautiful even through most red leaves had fallen. The rest green, red and golden leaves still shape a grand painting. On different watch towers, you have good chances to enjoy the different magnificent scenery of Mutianyu Great Wall. Even from a small hole on the wall, I have big sight to the scenery.

Distant View

After long distance walking, we saw the last opened watch tower closely. We must climb the steepest part to arrive No. 20 Watch Tower. It is almost straight from foot to see it. Many Chinese tourists gave up it, but we must conquer it because of its attraction. I want to take photos about its steep angle, but it loses because of my low-level techniques of photography. Climbing this part, I really experienced myself - the great of Chinese people. Arrived at destination, we all happy and excited owing to the most attractive and majestic scenery, and we saw the general trend of Mutianyu Great Wall which is the most shocked point.

It is hard to describe the mood and views when we arrived at the Mutianyu Great Wall. If you want to experience this world wonder, you should climb it personally and better not take cable car when you up to the Great Wall. thanks this tour, give me strong patriotic feeling!

Bird's Nest and Water Cube - Perfect Modern Buildings

Always want to appreciate the Beijing Bird Nest for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, yesterday, we finally success to achieve the desire. Out of the station of Olympic Center in Subway Line 8, we walked the way to the station of Olympic Park. On the way, we saw the Bird Nest, Water Cube, National Conference Center, etc.

Bird's Nest

It is a must –see for any Olympic fan, and the hands down best looking stadium in the world. The architect uses these random diagonals for a structure in a mesh to form the stadium. It looks very close to get to the Bird Nest, but it cost us long time to walk to there and had short distance chance to take pictures. From its outward appearance, I was addicted into its delicate design and exquisite skills. Contrary to its seemingly random appearance, strict rule-based methods were employed in the stadium’s construction, and each half of the 44,000 ton-steel shell is basically identical in design. During the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the opening ceremony, closing ceremony, track and field meets, and men's football final will be held here. It has been become the outstanding representative in Beijing buildings, not only during the Olympic Games, but also the following times, it attracts large number of travelers to visit it.

Water Cube

Water Cube, standing opposite to Bird Nest, is the other unique building in Beijing. In 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, it held the swimming, diving, synchronized and waterball matches. Designed in a novel style, the Water Cube has a foam-like water-molecule structure, making the architecture show a unique visual effect of water flowing and embodying the mysterious beauty, especially at night.

Many people took pictures with friends and family in the long square, and everyone want to leave a memorial picture with Bird Nest and Water Cube. In autumn, there are people flying the kites in the wind. Now the Olympic Park has become a good leisure and relaxing place for ordinary people and citizens. No matter who you are, you can visit these unique buildings here without any stops. But what made me pity is the unreasonable business means. Everyone come here is very happy, but these ignominious methods make people lost all interest. Do not take pictures with the people who wear the lovely clothes such as Mickey, if you do that, they would charge you without any explain before you take picture with them.

In general, the tour to Olympic Games is very happy. I suggest travelers visit with family or friends, and that will become more interesting. You can also book this tour online with tour guide and driver, only in unbeatable price!

Prince Gong's Mansion and Hutongs around Houhai Area

Today, we visit the Beijing center hutongs and Prince Gong's Mansion. Hutong means a lane or alley, in fact the passage formed by lines of Siheyuan. Hutong and Siheyuan are the outstanding representatives of traditional residence style in north China. If I were alone in hutongs, I must be lost in it.

Yandaixiejie - famous Hutong in Beijing

Got off Subway Line 2, the Guloudajie Station, we walked to Prince Gong's Mansion along with the various hutongs. It is said that hutong came into in Yuan Dynasty when Kublai Khan found Beijing as the capital. Most hutongs run from north to south or east to west, formed the neat layout of Beijing city. Along the way to Prince Gong's Mansion, we enjoyed some modern hutongs and some ancient hutongs, even, some hutongs has become dilapidated. The most interesting hutong is the Yandai Xiejie. As one of the Beijing old hutongs, Yandai Xiejie takes its advantage in location and was made to be a popular street for tourists. Walking along this street, we found small quantities of strange stuff like art, Mao kitsch, traditional Chinese clothing, jewellery, silk items, tea and teapots and a small selection of funkier designer clothes. It gathers the characteristics of Chinese traditional culture. It is not very long, but close to Houhai Lake.

Out of Yandai Xiejie, we saw the Yingding Bridge, located between Houhai and Qianhai. Seemed like the silver ingot, it was named as Yingding Bridge. There are various rickshaws with foreigners near Houhai area. The drivers tell guests the history and culture of hutongs nearby and drive them to enjoy them.

Prince Gong's Mansion

Passed the hutongs, we arrived at Prince Gong's Mansion, which was the residence of He Shen who is a favorite minister of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, was built in 1777. In the northwest of Forbidden City, this residence was bestowed to Prince Gong by Emperor Xianfeng, changed as this name. It is the only one prince's mansion open to the public, and it is the most well preserved mansion in Beijing. Besides the rooms, I like its garden very much. Especially the Hunxin Pavilion, it is located in the center of a lake in garden. Surrounded by water and lotus, Huxin Pavilion is best place to fish and enjoy view. In Qing Dynasty, drawing running water into residence must be approved by the emperor, and it is the one of the rare princely mansions have the privilege. Compared with the Imperial Garden in Forbidden City, this garden has more design conceptions. Every corner shows the details of designers and owner.

Ended this tour, I recommend it to every traveler in Beijing, to enjoy the different styles in architecture.

My Forbidden City Tour - (3)

With this sunshine day, we had Forbidden City tour. Though have seen it in TV or some media ways, it shocked me strongly in fact. Such large squares, big courtyards and various stories, I had almost addicted into it completely. What made me so fascinated were the Exhibition Hall of Jades and Exhibition Hall of Treasures.

Schatzkammer in Forbidden City

The Exhibition Hall of Jades, located at the Zhongcui Palace in Sic Eastern Palaces, shows various jade works. Most of made in Qianlong times. Why I said that? Because Qianlong Emperor set the culture of Jade as one of the Chinese culture, much valued the collection and study of jade, just as he loved jade so much. Even he took part in the design of jade, and made strict rule for using the jade. Under his ruler, the number of jade reached the top in history of China. In his life, he wrote 800 poems to described and praise the jade. In this hall, I find that the life of emperor was so luxurious. The table ware, wine sets and tea sets are all made from first-class jade. How luxury! When they eta, what they feel about their sets? If I were there, I must have no idea about meals, just these valuable jade works. And these showed jade pendants, they are so large and thick. Why these ancient people always liked to bring them? Just because it was the symbol of identify for noble people. Besides these jade articles in daily life, I found a rare thing in other countries – Jade Ruyi. It expresses meaning of harmony and lucky. According to the tour guide, it was a tool to relieve itching in some places you cannot touch by your hands.

Exhibition in Forbidden City

After this hall of jade, the more interesting place was the Exhibition Hall of Treasures. What it displayed were the most valuable thing in that time, even some you cannot find now. Exhibition Hall of Treasures is located at Ningshou Palace in northeast of Forbidden City. Entering into this hall, you would be surprised by these shining values, most of them made from gold, silver, jade, pearl, etc. In one word, they were all made from expensive materials. What attract me were these Buddhist sculpture made from gold. They show the various shapes and sizes of Buddhists. In fact, most of them I cannot realize. But moving posture and elaborate techniques were the most fantastic places. There is a sapphire narcissus bonsai leave me deep impression. The leaves and flowers all were made from sapphire, but you cannot guess what its original material if you do not read its note. Just seemed like real narcissus flower. I cannot guess the level of carving in that time, it was so amazing.

Ru Yi in Chinese

In fact, I also wanted to visit the exhibition of wedding, but it was not opened. Though a little pity, I had received much more than any other spots. Next time, I must visit completely this huge courtyard!

My Forbidden City Tour - (2)

I had to say it was a luxury tour, because of the fact of Forbidden City. In China, people call it as Palace Museum, but I do not know why firstly. After this tour, I know the reason. Besides these palace in different sizes and effects, it show various articles for daily use made from the valuable materials such as jade, emerald, coral, gold, etc. Don't you think this was a luxury tour?

Imperial Garden in Forbidden City

According to the tour guide, the Emperor Qianlong loved the jade deeply. In his life, he wrote 800 poems to described and praise the jade. Of course, he ordered workers made different furniture, appliances and decorations from jade. Loved jade had become his special hobby in that time. Due to his hobby, the number of jade articles reached the most and the time of jade arrival at a period of prosperity in Qing dynasty. In the Exhibition of Treasures, I had enjoyed the gifts to Queen Dowager Cixi, before this tour just heard some information about Cixi. After visited these gifts, I really know the high status of Cixi in Qing Dynasty.

The life of emperors in Chinese was so luxury beyond my imagination. What they used, ate, enjoyed were the best and most valuable things in China. And they were also good at enjoying life. Imperial Garden, the garden for emperors and their wives, is the most beautiful garden with various rockeries, old trees and pavilions. Duixiu Mountain is located at the north of Imperial Garden, built in Wangli Emperor of Ming Dynasty, it was only one rockery with fountain in Forbidden City.

Besides these, the most famous palace is the Hall of Supreme Harmony. It is the supremacy palace in Forbidden City, and it also known as the Jinluan Baodian in Chinese folk. Hall of Supreme Harmony is the largest palace in Forbidden City, used for carried some grand ceremonies. At here, emperor received the respects from courtiers. The scale and regulation is the highest in Chinese ancient constructions.

After Forbidden City tour, you would know more about Forbidden City, the imperial life, history and culture of Chinese. The history it shows is rich, if you are not familiar with the Chinese history and culture, I recommend it to you, and you will find more interesting things in it. The most important is it would shock you deeply. In addition, the tour guide is essential for your Forbidden City tour to find your way in such huge complex construction and understand what you are looking.

My Forbidden City Tour - (1)

After long terms' plan, I have really visited the Forbidden City today. First in my sight was the Tiananmen Tower, hanging a picture of Chair Mao, who had been the leader of China. He looked so kind. Just out of the Forbidden City, it crowded with a large number of tourists in different colors. So, I thought this big courtyard is more attractive than that in my thought.

Entering this tower, my tour guide told me the round situations of the Forbidden City, and I understand the real meaning of the "Forbidden City". Walked into the Meridian Gate with the people river and walked over the Jinshui Bridge, I saw a pair of copper lions stands in the front of Taihe Men. They are so grand that I feel their pressure. According to the tour guide, lion was the symbol of noble in ancient China. They were arranged here means the determination of protecting the imperial power. Also, the Taihe Men has a story that the emperor built the first three palaces, but after three months, they were burned. So the emperor thought his idea touched the power of Chinese gods, so he just heard the ideas of courtiers without any shelter. It is the origin of Yumen Tingzhen – the door to state affairs.

Hall of Supreme Harmony

After this door, I saw the true palace – Hall of Supreme Harmony (Taihe Dian in Chinese). This palace is the largest palace in Forbidden City in the highest level. 18 different bronze tripods are also the symbol of protecting imperial power, and obviously the Chinese emperors pay great attention to their power. Besides these things can be seen, the small decoration also attracted me lots. 11 small animals on the corners of top are big influence on that time. More animals, higher level, thus it can be seen the Hall of Supreme Harmony is the most important palace in these palaces. Inner of the palace, almost everywhere is carved golden dragon, show the status of the emperor. Along with my route, I would get more information about this big courtyard, every palace, every spots. Entering the imperial harem, the most interesting was the Chuxiu Gong – used as the living palace for concubines. The Queen Dowager Cixi had lived here and burned the Tongzhi Emperor.

However, due to the time, I had to end this tour. Even though I had not completed the Forbidden City tour, it left me deep impression in my Beijing tour.
