How to Soak up History while in Beijing

Tiananmen Square

The first stop of your historic tour is a visit to Tiananmen Tower. As an emblem of China, Tiananmen Tower enjoys a world-wide fame. It consists of two floors. On the top floor is double-eave styles tower which is covered with yellow tiles. On the front are 36 framed gates and windows. Around the tower base surrounds white marble rails and boards which were carved with lotus patterns. The materials in the tower come from Nanmu which were arrayed into a line with columns painted with dragon patterns. The floor is covered with yellow bricks which covers 2,000 square meters. The rooftops and side-roofs are decorated with statues. During your trip to Beijing, you have to see it for yourself.

On the second floor is the tower platform which as enclosed by low walls, with a carved white marble base. The platform covers 4,800 square meters, with two stone ladders on both sides. There are also five arch gates among of which the middle one is the largest and used to be passed only by the emperor. In the front of this tower lies the Golden Water River with seven marble bridges across. The widest bridge used to be called the Imperial Path Bridge which was to be passed only by the emperors. The rest bridges used to be used by those officials based on their ranks.

The next stop is to the Palace Museum. It consists of the outer palaces and inner courts according to the layout and function. The divide line lies in Qianqing Gate. The stark contrast of structure styles between these two areas is quit self-explanatory. The outer palaces center on the Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Central Harmony and Hall of Preserving Harmony. The Hall of Supreme Harmony used to be called Throne Room which was used to host morning meetings. This is a must-see sight to understand history of the historic city. On the flank sides are a series of other palaces and structures. The inner courts center on the Palace of Heavenly Purity, Hall of Union and Palace of Earthly Tranquility. On the flank sides are Hall of Mind Cultivation, Six Eastern Palaces, Six Western Palaces, Palace of Abstinence and Hall of Sound Growth of Successor. On the back is the back garden. This area used to be a place for the royal families to live and retreat.
