Short Journey, Fun and Exciting

A couple of weeks ago I thought I could never actually get to see the Great Wall. But fortunately enough my meeting with my superior got cancelled, so I got an entire day off work. I got to Beijing on a train ride very late on Monday. My tour guide picked me up and took me to the hostel where I checked in and then went to bed.

Mutianyu Great Wall

The next day I got up nice and early and after my tour guide showed up at my hotel, we headed off to the Great Wall on a van. This was the first time that I booked a tour to visit the Great Wall while I was on a business trip to China the whole time. Being first time visitor to the Great Wall, I got so excited and I wanted it to be done in the right way. On the ride over there, I had some small talk with my tour guide. She was very funny and knowledgeable. We got to Mutianyu section around 10:00am and headed off to the wall the minute we jumped off the van. My tour guide told me that this section of the wall was the less visited of the wall and not busy like some other sections. I got two hours to explore the wall. I got to say it felt really great to stretch my legs for a while after weeks of work and business.

The walk on the wall was fun and incredible. I saw a couple of towers on the wall - all in different shapes and sizes. Great pictures were all over the wall as the snaking wall meandered upon rugged mountain and disappeared into the remote horizon. After two hours of walking, it was time for us to get down the wall. The toboggan ride down the wall was more fun. It was just a shame that I only got half day to explore the wall and take in the refreshing countryside. Anyway, I am really glad that I have seen one of the Seven Wonders of the World. After we got down the wall we then headed back to the hostel.

I completely enjoyed my walk on the wall and it was probably the most fun stuff I did in China.

Half Day Walk outside Beijing

Over the last couple of days, I had been tied up with work. Yesterday, I got a day off, however. I figured that I might as well stretch my legs for a little bit. So I decided to head for the Great Wall outside Beijing for a walk. I really had fun that half day of walking on the wall at Badaling section.

Badaling Great Wall

My tour guide picked up at my hotel in the morning and we jumped on a van and hit the road to Badaling. The ride over there took me less than an hour. It was a sunny day, and the sun just started to show up in the sky when we got there. We waited in line for a while to get the tickets, afterwards, we hopped on a chair lift up the mountain where the wall was built. I got a great view of the snaking wall on the lift up. The wall itself was very impressive. We started to walk along the stone path the second we landed on the wall. As we walked along the wall, the crowds got thick - it did not surprise me though, considering that it was such a fine day and everyone needed some outdoor exercises, just like me. The mountain air was very crisp and refreshing at that time. It felt really great to breathe in the fresh air and take in everything came my way while walking along the path. There were plenty of great picture opportunities on the wall. My tour guide Lee was filling me in some history and legend about the Great Wall by my side, which made my walk on the wall more meaningful.

After over an hour of walking along the paths, I had to take a rest and catch some breath as my ankles started getting sore. So we found a watch tower where there were fewer tourists hanging around. By the time we continued on our walk, the sun had made its way almost in the middle of the sky. It was getting hotter and hotter, which made our walk even more difficult. My efforts were rewarded by the scenery, though, as we walked further on the wall. The scenery was even more spectacular than I saw before. Soon, it was time to get off the wall and call it a day for me. We grabbed a toboggan slide down the wall, which added more fun to my walk on the wall.

Overall, it was a great half day break and I really enjoyed my walk on the wall. I cannot wait to explore outside Beijing again! This time I will venture further.

Highlight Section of Great Wall

Last week I visited a couple of sections of the Great Wall. Got to say I was impressed by the wall. It is architecturally beautiful, looked up close and personal. I really enjoyed a great walk on the wall at different sections. To be honest, I just loved Jinshanling and Huanghuacheng Great Wall. Those sections were as amazing as they could be!

Huanghuacheng Great Wall

It was the second day of my visit to Beijing that I was taken to spend an entire day at Huanghuacheng by my tour guide. The Great Wall walk aside, I also crashed there for the night at a local farm house. The scenery at Huanghuacheng was one of a kind and the trails were kind of off the beaten path, which made our walk along the wall pretty hard and challenging. But it was all worth it. I was rewarded by the breathtaking views, amazing countryside landscapes as well as the out of the way outdoors. I really had a full day filled with fun, relaxing walk and blood-pumping adventure. The lodge at the farm house definitely is a bonus for my walk on the wall. I got a good rest that night and even had a great dinner prepared by the host of the farm house. The experience at Huanghuacheng was just as amazing as it could be and I really enjoyed every minute of it.

The next day right after I had my breakfast, together with my tour guide, we hit the road again. This time we headed for Jinshanling section. Our walk on the wall at Jinshanling was easier than what we had at Huanghuacheng as many parts of the wall were complete and well paved with stone. However, there were some parts along the way that caused us some trouble to march on. They were built on steep cliffs, making it hard to climb over. The watch towers at Jinshanling were mostly crumbled with only some ruins left - they felt like falling down at any minute. But I put together some courage and still got near them, which turned out a great experience. I am really glad I did that. I took dozens of great pictures over there. Moreover, while I was walking on the wall, I had also wished that I brought some camping gears, that way I could camp the night away at Jinshanling. Too bad that slipped my mind. Anyway, I really enjoyed a good time and had a lot of fun on the wall. Definitely once in a lifetime experience!
