Trek all the Way to Mutianyu Great Wall

Last week, together with my friend Joe, we visited the Great Wall at Mutianyu section with our guide Lin. The section of the wall is not off the beaten path but it is less crowded than Badaling, so after consulting with the trip advisor of Beijinglandscapes, we decided to head over there for a trek.

Mutianyu Great Wall

We only had half day to explore the wall and enjoy the trek on the wall, so we made an early start that day. We met at our hotel and jumped on a car with Lin and hit the road to Mutianyu. The ride was pleasant and did not take much longer than we thought. We made it to the foothill of the wall at about 8:30 and found our way to the cable car station with Lin the second we got off the car. The cable car is more like a chair lift and the ride up the wall was way more fun than we expected. On the chair, we saw the wall from above for the first time and the sight of the wall snaking all over the hill was just incredible. The surrounding countryside was covered by greenery and it was really overwhelming! The chair ride was short and soon we were landed on the wall. Had no idea the wall would be that huge and solid and so excited to stand on the wall. We were both like kids when we started to trek along the wall with Lin. We both felt dizzy walking from one side of the wall to the other, taking in the views and snapping photos. The scenery was breathtaking and completely dazzled us with its beauty.

It was a sunny day and the mountain air was quite crisp when we first got on the wall. But after an hour of trek on the wall, it got pretty warm and we soon got sweaty and puffing all the time and had to take some rest at some points on the wall. Lin filled us in plenty of history about the wall. The history made our trek on the wall more fun and enjoyable. After regaining our strength and not wanting to waste any time, we trekked and puffed the rest of the path. When it was time to get down the wall, we also grabbed a tobogon ride. The slide was fun too, running all the way down the hillside. Later we headed back to the city with Lin.

Overall, we really spent fun-filled half day exploring the wall in Beijing. Best Chinese ever!

Half Day Tour, Full of Pleasure

Just come to Beijing for business, I stayed in Beijing one day. For the half day free time, I enjoyed the Badaling Great Wall. The tour is very responsible leading me feel very happy. Booking this tour is the suggestion of my friend who have visited before. By the rare chance to Beijing, it is a must to get close to the world wonder.

Badaling Great Wall

I got up early and waited my tour guide. She told me the unique magnificence of Badaling Great Wall. I got on the car and started our journey. On the way, tour guide and I, we talked from Chinese ancient history to the background of Chinese Great Wall, from the past to the modern faster economy. In many topics, we held same ideas. About 1.5 hour, we arrived at Badaling. Weather on the day is very climate, shining everything. Temperature is little cooler. What I liked best is the environment. Located in the Beijing suburb area, Badaling Great Wall is just like a solitary guard protecting everything.

Just sanding at the foot, I can taste its brave and original atmosphere. Exciting feeling started to surround me in the beginning. I took out my preparation and climbed to the 'history teller'. First time come to visit Great Wall, I did not know there would be vendors here. They shouted and sold various souvenirs. I did not feel any tiredness just roaming in the noisy world. After ten minutes, I came to the ground where the venders are less. Oh, so terrific! I see the breathtaking scenery far away. Even the layout of the Great Wall far away appeared to me with dragon-style appearance. I admire the sceneries very much. If carefully appreciated, some wild flowers can be found in the wall corners. The watchtowers show very similar as the book said. Standing inside, I felt the feeling and war scene of ancient China. Journey is becoming closer and closer, but I felt more and more tired. At last, each step needs my all effort. I supported the wall with my hand finishing the remaining distance. Breath became very hard.

I counted the steps and encouraged myself. Yes, finally I was the hero finishing the whole journey. Mysterious exciting feeling cannot be expressed by any words!

Highlight of Our Great Wall Experience

For the last few days, I have visited the Great Wall at different sections with my brother Joe. It was really a fun and exciting excursion we did and it was full of overwhelming experiences. Part of the wall was well restored yet too touristy while other part left to nature and very wild. Both of us just loved the fragments of the wall off the beaten road. Our adventure to those sections was absolutely the highlight of our wall experience.

Simatai Great Wall

First highlight is of course the section called Jinshanling and Simatai. We have heard of the section before but we never expected it would be so wild and dangerous to trek through. We had to be extra careful with every step on the crumbling path overgrown with shrubs and bushes, making it very hard to trek through. But that was part of the adventure we were looking for and it was so thrilling to climb up and down the path. The trek we did was definitely much of a challenge for both of us and we had to stop from time to time to get some rest and in the meantime snap some great photos. The views out there on the snaking and crumbling wall were incredible and very spectacular and completely blew us away! The crumbling wall is way better than the restored wall, especially those crumbling watch towers which made great photos. By the way, it was a sunny day and we both enjoyed trekking along the crumbling path out there that day!

Huanghuacheng Great Wall

Another our favorite section is Huanghuacheng. The section of the wall is also off the beaten road and so different from all of the other sections of the wall. There were reservoir, dam and lakes out there, all sitting near the wall, making the sight very unique and rare. We had an incredible trek down there too and enjoyed exploring the combination of the wall and the lake. Our excursion over there was full of adventure and blood-pumping experiences and it was just incredible to trek through the wilderness out there. The wall itself out there was very old and wild too. Trekking along the crumbling path felt like traveling back in time and it was just amazing to explore the wall in that way!

Overall, it was a memorable wall experience we had in Beijing! Great Wall and great vacation!
