Karakuri Lake

The Karakuri LakeKarakuri Lake lies at the foot of an ice mountain east of Pamirs. The lake is created by ice erosion. It is the water source of local people also known as "the father of glaciers". Karakuri means, 'black sea', but the water in the lake is crystal clear.

Sitting 3,600 meters (about 11,811 feet) above sea level, with a depth of 30 meters (about 98 feet), Karakuri Lake occupies an area of more than 100,000 square kilometers.

The surface of Karakuri Lake reflects the snow-covered peaks of Mount Muztagata, which towers in the background. At dawn, Karakuri Lake looks as pure as a jade mirror. When the sun rises, the lake changes colors in the course of a few minutes from mauve to golden and then to light pink. And the lake is surrounded by vigorous grass and other plants.
