It covers 70,000 square metres, with a construction area being more than 50,000 square metres. Opened in 1991, the museum is a giant architectural in the Tang-dynasty style and it successfully symbolizes the great extent of Shaanxi history and its remarkable culture. 
Shaanxi History Museum comprises three large exhibition halls that are arranged in historical progession and is the first large-scale national museum with central air-conditioning, state-of-the art lighting, and modern security equipment in China. Shaanxi is considered the birthplace of Chinese culture, and the museum holds exhibits and artifacts from all 13 dynasties whose capitals were in the provice, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties.

2,700 works of art are exhibited in the main exhibition hall of Shaanxi History Museum, with an exhibition line extending 2,300 meters. The exhibition space is divided into an introductory hall, permanent exhibitions, special exhibitions, and temporary exhibitions, together with one named the National Painting Hall.

Exhibition Halls in Shaanxi History Museum

The permanent exhibition in Shaanxi History Museum mainly shows the ancient history and civilization of Shaanxi. Representative pieces selected from all periods show the development of civilization in this region. The exhibition hall has a space of over 4,600 square meters. It covers three exhibition rooms divided to seven parts (Prehistory, Zhou, Qin, Han, Wei-Jin-North and South dynasties, Sui-Tang, and Song-Yuan-Ming-Qing). The superlative 2,000 selected objects include: painted Neolithic ceramics reflecting living conditions and the pursuit of vibrant art forms of the early people, bronzes reflecting the rise of Zhou people, bronze weapons including swords, statuary of horses and soldiers, showing the way in which Qin unified all under heaven, Tang-dynasty gold and silver objects and Tang sancai ceramics, displaying the most flourishing period of feudal glory. All of these are mixed by models of silver pot in Shaanxi History Museumarchaeological sites, drawings and photographs.

These works in Shaanxi History Museum systematically show the anient history of Shaanxi from 150,000 years ago to the year 1840. Because there are many dynasty had settled their capital in Xian, such as Zhou, Qin, Western Han, Sui and Tang. This not only shows the extent of culture in ancient Shaanxi, but it also shows the highest level of cultural development of social economy and culture in China.

The temporary exhibits hall, located on the east side of Shaanxi History Museum, has had a varity of exhibitions containing Tang-tomb wall paintings that are 39 of the actual paintings. Shaanxi's wall murals of this kind rank first in the whole country. They are bounds with concept and line and have rich details. They reflect Tang customs and are superb works of art.

The special exhibition hall is situated on the west side of Shaanxi History Museum. Its first two exhibitions were a Shaanxi bronzes exhibit (260 were on show) and a Shaanxi-through-the-dynasties terracotta masterpieces exhibit (341 objects were exhibited). The hall has a space of around 2,600 square meters.

Shaanxi History Museum holds 115,000 objects in its collections. The more representatives of these collections include bronzes, Tang-dynasty tomb wall paintings, terracotta statuary, ceramics as pottery and porcelain, construction materials through the dynasties, Han and Tang bronze mirrors, coins and currency, calligraphy, rubbings, scrolls, woven articles, bone articles, wooden and lacquer and iron and stone objects, seals, as well as some contemporary cultural relics and ethnic objects.
