Small Wild Pagoda

a close shot of Small Wild Pagoda in XianSmall Wild Pagoda, located in the Jianfu Temple in the southern suburb of Xian City, is about 2 kilomters to the south of the city wall. It is an important cultural relic and one of the remaining symbols of ancient Chang an (the name of Xian in the Tang Dynasty).

Small Wild Pagoda gets its name because it is smaller than the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, although unlike the former, it is dainty and exquisite in its apparance, and with more stories and more important in the architecture history. It was completed in 709 A.D., when Buddhism was firmly stablished in China. It was built to store the sutras and the figurines of Buddha, which were brought back from India by a famous Buddhist monk named Yijing.

Small Wild Pagoda

Reaching 43.38 meters (142 feet) high, this multi-eave brick pagoda is thirteen stories tall. Small Wild Pagoda is square on plane and rises skyward in an elegant spindle shape. Above the ground floor, the height of each storey diminishes, rendering a graceful curve to the contour.Small Wild Pagoda with a lake and a bridge

A giant iron bell 3.5 meters (11.4 feet) in height and about 10 tons in weight resides in the Jianfu Temple. It makes a magnificent clear sound that can be heard more than three miles away. The elegant pagoda along with the bell is known as 'The Morning Bell Chimes of the Pagoda' and is considered one of the eight major cultural sites in the province.

It is said that the Small Wild Pagoda had lost several stories during an earthquake in the 1500s. However, it still looks complete. It has finer detailing in the brickwork than the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. Above the arched doorways on the first tier are Tang engravings of ivy designs and Buddhist figures. The pagoda is part of a temple complex and monastery. It is also possible to climb to the top of this structure.
