Shennong Stream

Cruise on Shennong Stream in YichangShennong Stream also known by its Chinese name of "Shen Nong Xi" is one of the most important ports of call for Yangtze Three Gorges tour. It is a 60-kilometer tributary of the Yangtze River, located in the Hubei Province of central China. Originates in the southern part of Shennongjia Natural Reserve,  the crystal clear and unpolluted water flows swiftly with its length of 60 km, just like a dragon meandering through the mountains and cliffs, and then joins the Yangtze River in Badong County, Hubei Province.

Originally the Shennong Stream watercourse consisted of a wild river traversing a tortuous alignment flanked by almost vertical limestone cliffs; however, since the beginning of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam downstream on the Yangtze, the water level has risen approximately 155 meters at the mouth of Shen Nong Stream.(Jin, 2006) The lower reaches of the Shen Nong Stream are presently a torpidly flowing river, most of whose previously scenic vertical gorge is now submerged. By the completion of the dam construction in 2009, a further 20 meters of gorge will be inundated.

A tour by sampan is just like a shooting arrow. One exciting sport played here is "Gliding in Water". The section of the river earmarked for this game is twenty kilometers long and passes along the Mianzhu, Yingwu and Longchang Gorges. One rides a boat starting in a branch of the Shennong Stream and glides past the four-kilometer-long Mianzhu Gorge and then enters the main stream of the Shennong Stream. The boat Shengnong Stream with green mountian aroundglides over the cobble-strewn river bed, its bottom often banging against the stones. It is not without risk yet exhilarating. It is thrilling to battle with the nature.

Drifting on the local "peapod", you'll be able to enjoy not only the beautiful scenery along the Shennong Stream, but also see cliff-wallows swishing in the air, groups of monkeys sporting among the trees, shoals of fish swimming in the clear water, as well as ancient coffins in the rocky crevices left by the Ba people, and Shennong colorful pebbles.
